[ARTICLE] βAt first, I underestimated Rowoon. I had this preconceived notion that idols, especially good-looking ones, couldnβt act well. But Rowoon turned out to be emotionally very deep. The ability to immerse oneself in emotion is crucial for an actor. When you let him fall into that state, it feels so real. Once heβs truly in it, his emotional acting can rival anyoneβs.β
I had mostly worked with middle-aged and older actors in films, but I wanted to try something new with fresh, young talent. Disney+ responded positively to that idea. When Rowoon said he wanted to do it, they were thrilled. They believed he had strong influence and appeal, and that naturally led to the casting of the current lineup. I felt the energy of youth was a great thing.
Their acting may not be as refined as veteran actorsβ, but even the editor said he felt happy while editing their scenes. That youthful energy was infectious. Many young actors tend to be cautious and guarded as a form of self-protection, but these three gave their all. That honesty was fascinating and beautiful.
One of the most important things for actors is honesty. They need to know how to reveal themselves. Idol-turned-actors or young performers often try to hide their flaws. That might be a strength as an idol, but as an actor, it can be a weakness. I wanted them not to be afraid of that.
I donβt think many young actors have had the chance to explore delicate, detailed acting. Theyβre often used to conveying emotions in a straightforward way, so the audience can grasp them easily. But I wanted to dissect emotions there are many shades of sadness, after all. We discussed that and I asked them to reflect it in their acting.
It wasnβt that Rowoon simply fit Siyulβs image. After spending time with him over drinks, I realized he was a really good person. I decided to make him into Siyul. His beard, makeup, and skin tone all went through dozens of tests. We all worked together to create that image. I believe if an actor can truly act and has good chemistry with the team, the right image can always be built.
There was a scene where Siyul cries after fighting with Wang Hae. We finished it in one take. Rowoon was thrilled. I rarely give a one-take βOK,β but I did because I knew we couldnβt shoot it again. It felt like he had poured out every last drop of energy and sweat. I was genuinely shocked thatβs not easy to do. He really gave it his all.
During the makeup tests, his skin tone was two to three times darker than usual. We thought about giving him a scene where he could wash and come out cleaner, but there wasnβt really a fitting moment in the script. I wish there had been it wouldβve been nice to show that side too,β he said with a laugh.
