The Philippines commemorates a significant day in honor of Dr. José Rizal, a pivotal figure in the nation’s history. His writings were instrumental in exposing the abuses of colonial rule and fostering a sense of national identity among Filipinos. Although he was executed in 1896, his death did not quash the movement for reform; rather, it galvanized the fight for independence.

Rizal was not only a prolific writer but also a polyglot, speaking over 20 languages, and he wielded his words as powerful tools in the pursuit of freedom and reform.

Participants later gathered at the St. Dominic Chapel for a Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. Arturo P. Pestin, O.P.

Filipino sign language interpreters supported the program to ensure accessibility for Deaf participants, complementing students' direct use of sign language in communicating with them.

The Department of Secondary Education hosted the 40th Fr. Antonio Gonzales, O.P. Memorial Lecture on November 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Dr. Robert C. Sy Grand Ballroom of the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building.

With the theme “Ex Corde Magistri (From the Heart of the Teacher),” the department invited Most Rev. Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, O.P., the first Asian Master of the Order of Preachers, as the guest speaker. In his lecture, he underscored Dominican teachings on truth, the vocation of teaching, and the centrality of prayer, “reminding us that all truth comes from God.”

Fr. Timoner highlighted that prayer keeps one’s work rooted in wonder, and that studying and loving the truth serves as “a path to holiness and service”—a mission integral to the life of an educator.

The memorial lecture forms part of the series of activities commemorating the College of Education’s 100th founding anniversary.
