A Ham Radio Hero in the Midst of Disaster: The Story of Albert Bahunsua (DY8WTN) - OSCAR 137

In the aftermath of the recent disaster that struck parts of Mindanao, one name stood out among the many volunteer responders who kept communication lines open when they were needed most — Albert Bahunsua, DY8WTN.

A skilled and dedicated amateur radio operator, Albert played a vital role during the emergency by maintaining critical communication links across Davao Occidental, Sarangani, General Santos City, Davao del Sur, and even Balut Island, connecting response clusters, civic groups, and emergency coordinators when conventional communication systems were disrupted.

Despite the widespread impact of the disaster, Albert’s commitment to public service never wavered. Even while his own residence was severely damaged, and despite living with a physical disability that requires him to use a wheelchair, he chose to prioritize assisting others through emergency radio operations rather than focusing on his personal situation.

From his station, he continued to serve as a lifeline of communication, ensuring that vital information reached responders and coordination centers during the critical stages of the emergency response.

His actions have been widely recognized within the amateur radio community as a powerful example of dedication, resilience, and selfless service — a reminder that heroism is not defined by physical strength, but by willingness to serve others in times of need.

In light of his contribution and personal losses, fellow ham radio operators and members of the Philippine Amateur Radio Association (PARA) are now encouraging support to help rebuild his damaged home, as a gesture of gratitude and solidarity for his heroic efforts during the emergency operations.

The appeal underscores the strong spirit of unity within the amateur radio community, where operators not only serve during disasters but also stand together in supporting one another in times of personal hardship.

Albert Bahunsua’s story stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of ham radio operators — proving once again that when all systems fail, human compassion and service continue to connect those in need.
