FACEBOOK BAN ON THE TABLE? 📱🇵🇭
“Hindi pwede ang ating social media platforms kagaya ng Facebook ay kumikita lang pero wala silang accountability.”
On September 19, 2026, House Deputy Speaker Janette Garin confirmed that requiring the DICT to consider a Facebook ban was among the options being discussed as lawmakers pushed social media platforms to become more accountable in the Philippines.
Garin said platforms operating in the country should have personnel who can immediately respond to government concerns involving scams, harmful content, and other online threats. She also raised restricting platforms’ ability to earn from advertising as a less drastic alternative to a ban.
Earlier, on August 25, Malacañang also opened the possibility of broader restrictions on Facebook and other digital platforms. Asked whether banning a platform could be considered, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro responded, “Kung kinakailangan po,” while stressing that the effects and accountability issues would first need to be studied.
