Yesterday, March 27, 2026, the Japanese government officially announced a sudden halt to all new "Food Service" visas under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program, effective April 13, 2026. This is not just a policy change—it is a final "death sentence" for the Filipino youth who have dedicated their lives to reaching Japan.

■ Face the Harsh Reality: Why did the Philippines lose?

The 5-year "Acceptance Ceiling" of 50,000 workers has been effectively seized and monopolized by other nations.

1st: Vietnam – Approx. 16,000 (Dominating the market share)
2nd: Indonesia – Approx. 14,000 (Fiercely seizing the slots)
3rd: Myanmar – Approx. 12,000 (A massive surge in applications)
4th: PHILIPPINES – ONLY Approx. 3,500

Filipinos are world-renowned for their "Omotenashi" (hospitality) and English skills. But what does that matter now? The truth is bitter: while other countries fought with obsession and high passing rates in JFT and JLPT, the Philippines moved too slowly. Because of low exam performance and lack of urgency, the "Ticket to Japan" has been snatched away by those who were better prepared.

■ The Gates are Slammed Shut

As of April 13, 2026, NO NEW COEs will be issued for overseas recruitment. Furthermore, NO STATUS CHANGES will be permitted for students already in Japan.

We have shouted about the importance of Japanese language education and the obsession to pass for a reason—to avoid this exact "worst-case scenario." But reality is heartless.

■ Is there any hope left?

The only remaining hope for this sector is SSW Level 2, which currently has no numerical limit. But we must ask ourselves: if the Philippines couldn't even secure the slots for Level 1, how many will actually have the discipline to break through the much harder Level 2?

For everyone else, the road to Japan through the Food Service sector has officially vanished.
