WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT?!

Binatikos ni Dean Mel Sta. Maria ang pahayag ni Sen. Bam Aquino na dapat sa Philippine courts litisin ang mga kaso ng umano’y extrajudicial killings.

Ayon kay Sta. Maria, hindi simpleng murder cases ang usapin kundi Crimes Against Humanity—mga kasong malawak at sistematikong pag-atake laban sa sibilyan, na saklaw ng Republic Act No. 9851 at ng Rome Statute.

Giit niya, hindi raw sapat na ituring ito bilang ordinaryong criminal cases lalo’t mataas na personalidad ang mga sangkot. Aniya, mahirap umanong masiguro na walang pressure, pananakot, o impluwensiya kung dito sa bansa idaraos ang paglilitis.

“Kapag ang krimen ay pag-atake sa mismong konsepto ng sangkatauhan, ang venue ng hustisya ay dapat tumutugma sa bigat nito,” pahayag ni Sta. Maria.

Dagdag pa niya, maaaring magdulot ng social unrest at intimidation ang lokal na paglilitis, lalo na sa mga pamilya ng biktima na aniya’y mas vulnerable sa pressure at pananakot.

Para kay Sta. Maria, ang International Criminal Court sa The Hague ay nagbibigay ng “geographic at political distance” na makatutulong umano upang masiguro na ebidensiya ang mananaig, hindi pulitika.

“Would Senator Aquino want to also take this hope away? Iyon na lang ang tinatanganan nila, tatanggalin pa,” pagtatapos niya.
