Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared on Saturday, February 1, that Canada will apply 25% tariffs on U.S. goods in retaliation to President Donald Trump's new trade measures.
Tariffs on C$30 billion ($21 billion) of goods take effect Tuesday, alongside Trump’s, with the remaining C$125 billion ($86 billion) following in 21 days. This follows Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on Chinese goods, moves economists warn could spark a trade war.
Retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada target American goods like as appliances, apparel, sports gear, fruits, wine, bourbon, and beer. Daily trade at the U.S.-Canada border amounts to more than $2.5 billion, mostly in industry and energy.
