Know Your North

Know Your North is an online series which features short documentaries and narratives about the northern part of the Philippines.

Know Your North is an advocacy to document and archive the rich culture and traditions of the northern region. It features storylines that embody the aspirations and essence of the people of northern Luzon. The themes are environmental protection, heritage preservation, and cultural elevation. Know Your North, the title and series tagline, interweaves a universe of meaningful narratives under a si

ngle purpose. Each storyโ€™s unique value and message enriches the series. The collective impact under a shared identity extends well beyond the individual bearing of its parts. The series title is an invitation to learn, to be informed, to dive deeper, and to find purpose. Know Your North is an initiative of Victory Liner (VLI), a steward with the intent to tackle a wide range of meaningful subjects, point the spotlight on less known chronicles, raise awareness on pertinent issues, and communicate positive values.

Amparo Balansi Mabanag is the first Ga'dang gumabukat (beadwork/accessories maker) and gumasinnun (weaver) to receive the GAMABA distinction.

The highest governmental honor bestowed for traditional folk artists in the Philippines is the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA), sometimes referred to as the National Living Treasures award.

It honors people or organizations who, via their proficiency in particular traditional art forms, have significantly enhanced the nation's intangible cultural legacy.

The award recognizes artists that flourish in traditional art forms, actively support their preservation and promotion, and are instrumental in transferring their skills and knowledge to the next generation.

In this Know Your North feature, we point the spotlight on an artisan who excels in her field and ensures that her Ga'dang heritage is passed on.
