Know Your North

is an online series which features short documentaries and narratives about the northern part of the Philippines.

Know Your North is an advocacy to document and archive the rich culture and traditions of the northern region. It features storylines that embody the aspirations and essence of the people of northern Luzon. The themes are environmental protection, heritage preservation, and cultural elevation. Know Your North, the title and series tagline, interweaves a universe of meaningful narratives under a single purpose. Each story’s unique value and message enriches the series. The collective impact under a shared identity extends well beyond the individual bearing of its parts. The series title is an invitation to learn, to be informed, to dive deeper, and to find purpose. Know Your North is an initiative of Victory Liner (VLI), a steward with the intent to tackle a wide range of meaningful subjects, point the spotlight on less known chronicles, raise awareness on pertinent issues, and communicate positive values.

Our heartfelt congratulations to young directors Yrrah Carelo and Edward Factes, along with the entire Daghili Pictures team, for their nomination for Best Documentary for their film "Romeo and Julie" at the 49th Gawad Urian.

Additionally, their team was a finalist in the 2025 Know Your North Film Festival.

More feathers in our cap.

Our documentary feature, "The Last Tattooed Women of Tanudan", has been named a semi-finalist at the Milan Filmmakers Awards and remains in contention for the finals in July.

Furthermore, our documentary on GAMABA awardee Amparo Mabanag is also a semi-finalist at the Tokyo Women Film Festival and is competing for awards in July as well.

Know Your North Kaliwanagan Series - Cirilo "Sapi" Bawer
Kaalaman. Karunungan. Kaliwanagan.

The purposes of the Know Your North advocacy are to facilitate learning and be instrumental in the dissemination of knowledge, for deeper understanding, critical thinking, and hopefully, enlightenment.

As members of tribes, clans and communities, we have always turned to the mature and learned around our campfire for insight, wisdom, experience, and guidance.

In this episode of Know Your North’s Kaliwanagan series, well respected culture-bearer, community leader, educator and folklorist Cirilo “Sapi” Bawer plays the tongali (kalinga flute) and kubing, performs several traditional songs with his daughter and provides insights on Kalinga traditions like the Bodong (peace pact) and way of life.

After a long career in government service and education, Dr.Abercio (lolo Abe) Rotor and his wife retired in his ancestral home in Vigan.

Over the years since his retirement, he has conducted art classes for the neighboring children, authored numerous books, produced basi, created hundreds of paintings, taught music and shared his knowledge of science and the humanities freely.

The walls of his home are adorned with his murals and visited by tourists eager to not only experience the nuances of the house, but to listen to the philosophies of a man full of wisdom.

Lolo Abe Rotor is hailed as one of the outstanding sons and daughters of the province of 'locos Sur and is the recepient of the Father Jose Burgos Award for Science Journalism.

Our film, Steve Rogers, is an Official Selection to the 2026 Papa International Film Festival in Hungary. This follows the Best Director award at the TRAVEL FILM International Film Festival in Moscow in February 2026.

Steve Rogers, an American based in Sagada, guides adventure-seekers and tourists across the region's bike trails and canyons. As a long-term resident married to a local, he is in a unique position to observe and immerse in Sagada from within and also from a distance. He shares his insights on raising his children, the inherent strength and character of people of the highlands and how change and development will be addressed by the locals on their own terms.

In Moscow, Filipino director Gabriel Malvar claimed Best Director at the 2026 Travel Film International Film Festival, his Sagada-set "Steve Rogers, Philippines", an intimate portrait of an American guide who made the Cordilleras his home.
