Seafarers’ increasing dependence on digital technologies for both work and leisure highlights the need for onboard connectivity that is fast, reliable, and ‘alwayson’, says Inmarsatreport ‘The Digital Wave’.
Published by Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat business, The Digital Wave: Transforming vessels into floating offices and remote homesexamines how crews and shore-based teams are using digital technologies today – and the connectivity they rely on during work and leisure time.
Of the approximately 100 seafarerssurveyed for thereport, 88% have access to the Internet for work and leisure, while 12% have Internet access solely for work purposes. On average, the respondents reported spending five hours a day using digital tools to complete work-related tasks.
The research indicates that crew on deck are increasingly using smart ship technologies to optimise route planning and manage energy consumption.According to the Thetius IQ Intelligence database, the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems at seaisalso on the rise. AI systems enhance situational awareness to help seafarers detect targets and make timely collision-avoidance decisions. By reducing the navigational burden on crew, they can also minimise fatigue-induced errors.
In the engineering department, AI is the foundation for the condition monitoring and predictive maintenance systems that allow personnel to proactively schedule and execute services, thereby cutting downtime and costs. Thanks to the combination of video conferencing with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), onboard engineers can also connect with shore-based support staff to receive live and accurate troubleshooting assistance.
In addition, AR- and VR-based simulation has revolutionised seafarer training by enabling crew to gain hands-on experience of a system, process, or piece of equipment from the safety of a classroom.
Connectivity for the remote home
With the maritime industrybecoming ever-more reliant on digital technologies to support safe and efficient operations, the connectivity needs of many vessels today are comparable to those of small and medium-sized businesses – and ships are increasingly regarded as ‘floating offices’.However, since a vessel is not only a place of work but also a ‘remote home’ for seafarers, onboard connectivityis required during leisure as well as work hours.
In 2022, in a major breakthrough for seafarer welfare, amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 made crew connectivity a regulatory requirement. Yet even before then, the provision of high-speed onboard Internet access had established itself as a competitive differentiator among ship owners.
During Inmarsat’s 2023‘Connected Future’ seminar, Ron Welles, C-Comm Manager, Edison Chouest Offshore, discussed a fuel resupply missionto Antarctica in 2021 in which crew Internet proved pivotal.
According to Welles, Edison Chouest was informed it would be unable to hire seafarers for the mission unless it could provide them with the facility to keep in touch with their families. In response, the company turned to Inmarsat for onboard connectivity. “Two-and-a-half years later, it’s one of the most successful jobs that we’ve done in that part of the world,” commented Welles. “If you don’t provide the crew with a means to [connect with family], you’ll have a difficult time in today’s world.”
The importance of enabling crew to maintain contact with loved ones is reflected in the report’s survey results, which found that 80% of respondents primarily use their free time on board to communicate with friends and family.Meanwhile,70% use their leisure time to browse the Internet, 64% to make and receive video calls, and 54% to watch films – all activities that rely on stable, high-speed connectivity.
In a follow-up question about the impact of slow connectivity or Internet outages, respondents referred to “stress and anxiety”, the inability to take “proper rest”, “loneliness and fatigue”, “mental trauma”, “depression”, and a lack of focus during work hours.A reliable connectionhelps seafarers to avoid these problems not only by allowing them to talk to friends and relatives and unwind but also by connecting them to trained healthcare professionals through mental health hotlines and telemedicine services.
High speeds, unlimited data, and global coverage
Given the bandwidth required to support the systems and services used above and below deck – and the potential consequences of a lagging or unstable connection on safety, efficiency, and crew well-being – ship owners are increasingly seeking fast, reliable, and ‘always-on’ connectivity.
Inmarsat’s newly launched fully managed service, NexusWave, integrates multiple high-speed networks in real time – Global Xpress Ka-band, low-Earth orbit services, and as-available coastal LTE – with an additional layer of resilient L-band. Delivered by a single provider as a unified solution, it offers complete transparency on total cost of ownership, meaning vessels are reliably and securely connected to high-speed Internet– with no unexpected charges.
As a result, customers’ ships are transformed into seamlessly connected, high-performing floating offices and remote homes – with benefits for operational safety andefficiencyas well ascrew welfare.
“It’s clear that seafarers today require digital technologies as much to unwind in their free time as they do to perform their jobs effectively,”said Marco Cristoforo Camporeale, VP Strategy & Business Development, Inmarsat Maritime. “By delivering high-speed connectivity, unlimited data, and global coveragein one package, NexusWave keeps vessels and crews connected around the clock, wherever they are sailing, to help ensure safe, efficient operations and a happy and motivated workforce.”

Carlos Yulo Creates History with Double Gold at Paris Olympics! 🥇🥇
by: Dave Florian Balanon

Carlos Yulo has engraved a special place in the hearts of Filipinos when he bagged two gold medals during the Paris 2024 Olympics. One came from his first-ever gymnastic floor exercise win by any Filipino man. Then, upping the ante, he added another golden medal through his triumph in vaulting thereby becoming the maiden Filipino double gold winner in an Olympic event.

Prominent dignitaries such as President Ferdinand Marcos hailed Yulo’s exploits and noted that this was a significant moment for the entire nation. Consequently, under local Philippine laws, he will be rewarded with 6 million pesos and a congressional medal as well as additional incentives of nearly 10 million pesos.

The businesses have also come out to support him by giving him a house fully furnished for life-long supplies of different items and many others. Likewise, cafes countrywide bearing the name “Yulo” have been offering freebies during this period.

Let us all join this celebration to mark Carlos Yulo’s amazing journey and outstanding achievements for our country!

As we look forward to this year’s Day of the Seafarer (DotS), I want to take a moment to recognise the incredible contributions of our seafarers. Social media, both a boon and a burden, plays a crucial role in this acknowledgment. The IMO ‘encourages governments, shipping organisations, companies, shipowners, and all other parties to promote and celebrate’ the essential work of those at sea.

Social media is our industry's most powerful tool for directly reaching our seafarers, acknowledging their vital role in global society, and advancing best practices for crew welfare and safety. The theme for this year's Day of the Seafarer, , aligns perfectly with this mission. The 2024 DotS campaign offers an opportunity to harness the strength of social media to spread important safety messages that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The role of social media in enhancing seafarer wellbeing, attracting new talent, and addressing critical issues like working in war zones, piracy threats, gender equality, sexual harassment, bullying, and mental health cannot be overstated.

At Wallem, we are committed to supporting the campaign. We will encourage our seafarers and shore-based colleagues to actively participate, contributing to a safer maritime sector. Our ambition is for all seafarers and the broader industry to engage online, driving the DotS campaign and supporting Wallem’s commitment to safety.

The IMO International Day for Women in Maritime 2024 is both a celebration and a renewed call to action for our industry as it acknowledges its progress and opportunities in addressing gender imbalance.

IMO's commitment to progress is enshrined in UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality), however global commitments are open to interpretation, while it is also fair to recognize unconscious bias as a widespread phenomenon.

Fortunately, substantive work is being done to promote the recruitment, retention, and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector, whether as seafarers, maritime professionals, or in leadership positions.

IMO’s award of consultative status to WISTA International, for example, provides a platform to benchmark the pace of change and we look forward to reviewing the 2024 Women in Maritime Survey against research in 2021.

We must accept that our own organization remains one of gender imbalance. However, given that Wallem’s vision for shipping is that “the future is human,” it will be no surprise to learn that I wholeheartedly endorse this year’s over-arching IMO theme of Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety.

We can also say that Wallem has been working hard to change across our divisions, and enable Wallem women to bring forward their perspectives, concerns, and innovations. We are proud members of WISTA across a number of countries.

In fact, in recently inviting a number of women working at Wallem to reflect on their roles, we asked what we have been doing right and what more we can do.

If more than one of our respondents flagged up our industry as “male-dominated,” I was encouraged that responses described Wallem as an employer that recognizes talent and passion regardless of gender, which is also inclusive and equitable on learning opportunities and promotion. I was also gratified that respondents acknowledged ‘gender equity’ as extending to leadership roles.

While the number of Wallem women seafarers admittedly remains small, I was also delighted to note that a culture of gender equality was also said to apply on board Wallem’s managed vessels.

And, while “nothing is impossible for women even in this male-dominated industry” – as one of our respondents puts it - we were reminded that there is room for improvement. Promoting non-discriminatory behaviour and upholding accountability demands continuous attention, our respondents opined, while decision-making – too - is an area for inclusivity.

We also know that gender bias and stereotyping are everyday occurrences, even in organizations committed to diversity and inclusion.

I share this feedback here to encourage the collaborative approach so often invoked when maritime voices express themselves as in favour of progressive attitudes. If it does not qualify as what our marketing friends describe as ‘through leadership,’ I am content to offer it as an invitation to ‘joined up thinking.’
