📚 Convex vs. Concave Functions 😊

Think of two simple shapes:

🥣 CONVEX FUNCTION = A BOWL

It looks like this:

∪

Imagine dropping a tiny ball inside a bowl.
The ball rolls down until it reaches the lowest point

✅ Convex → Think BOWL
✅ Middle is lower
✅ We usually look for the minimum

Example: f(x) = x²

---

⛰️ CONCAVE FUNCTION = A HILL

It looks like this:

∩

Imagine climbing a little hill.
Eventually, you reach the highest point

✅ Concave → Think HILL
✅ Middle is higher
✅ We usually look for the maxmum

Example: f(x) = −x²

---

🧠 Super-Easy Memory Trick

😊 Convex: ∪ → Find the bottom

☹️ Concave: ∩ → Find the top

So when you hear:

🔹 Minimize a convex function → Find the bottom of the bowl. 🥣
🔹 Maximize a concave function→ Find the top of the hill. ⛰️

That simple idea is one of the foundations of convex optimization, a powerful tool used in mathematics, engineering, machine learning, communications, and many other fields.

💡 Learn the picture first. The mathematics becomes much easier afterward.

🌞 In reinforcement learning, an agent learns by receiving rewards for its actions. But not all rewards are the same. Some rewards come only after reaching the final goal, while others guide the agent step by step.

📖 The reward function tells the AI what behavior is good and what it should learn to repeat.
