India Plane Crash: Air India Boeing 787 Crashes After Takeoff, Massive Toll

June 12, 2025 – Ahmedabad, India — Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner carrying 242 people (230 passengers and 12 crew), crashed just seconds after departing Ahmedabad Airport en route to London Gatwick, suddenly plummeting into the B.J. Medical College area at around 1:39 p.m. IST .

Tragically, 241 lives have been lost—including 241 onboard and at least 28 people on the ground—with over 60 more injured in campus buildings and hostels hit by debris and fire . The sole survivor is a British national of Indian origin, seated at emergency exit 11A; he escaped serious harm and is currently hospitalized .

Among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 Brits, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian . Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have both expressed their profound sorrow .

Rescue operations involved fire crews, ambulances, CISF, NDRF, and the Indian Army. All flights in and out of Ahmedabad were temporarily halted . Investigations are underway by the DGCA, Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), and international teams from the UK’s AAIB and US NTSB, as this marks the first fatal hull loss of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011 .

The precise cause remains unclear, though preliminary data suggest the plane stalled soon after takeoff .
