Independent journalism for the Artlets community, the University and the country. In 1964, with the merger of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and the College of Liberal Arts, the need for a publication that is to become the mouthpiece of the students arose, coupled with the restlessness of bearing the new identity of “Artlettes.”

Determined to unify the two reluctant University bodies, Rey

Datu, then Arts and Letters Student Council Vice President, became the first editor in chief of the campus newspaper that would soon be known as The Flame. The Flame, in its humble beginnings, was the child of mother publications Blue Quill and the Journal of Arts and Sciences. It eventually became part of the Artlet identity, on the lookout for the latest issues and trends prevailing in and around the Faculty, looking over student council elections, newly-implemented college policies, and curriculum revisions, among others. In the middle of the 1970s, with the full avowal of Proclamation No. 1081 as the law of the land, The Flame switched to another medium that would be the predecessor of the magazine known today, becoming the Journal of the Humanities which featured profound essays and articles solicited from the Artlet community. The publication was active in promulgating its opinions on issues regarding the government at this dark time in Philippine history, without compromising its role as a humanistic journal. Likened to Heraclitus’ symbol of motion by former Dean Magdalena Villaba-Cue, The Flame has developed a reputation for being a seeker of truth. The mood was carried over to the 1980s, a time characterized by issues of labor unions’ demonstrations, political unrest, and coups. The Flame endured to be the torch, blazing a trail that would become one of the hallmarks of the publication: fearless reportage. Battling against censorship, financial constraints, and fellow Artlets whose rebellious hunger for radical change slowly declined, The Flame continued to investigate the issues plaguing the country then. The publication released a lampoon issue titled The Phlegm, which satirized the general elections on May 11, 1992. The lampoon immortalized observed truths that stretched to become universal, and was asked to be taken in good humor and judgment. The Flame continued to defy conventions, adding to the continuous outpouring of talents trained under the guidance of literary giant former Dean Ophelia Dimalanta. With the turn of the next century, the headlines became inquisitive in search for answers. The Phlegm, Lagablab (the Filipino counterpart of the publication which put focus on national issues), and The Flame never wavered in challenging Artlets to become critical thinkers. The journal eventually transformed into more accessible glossy magazines that are readily available in the newsstands at the lobby of the St. To honor its golden anniversary, The Flame released a commemorative issue, intensifying its staffers and editors’ desire to serve the students and echo their sentiments to the administration. From the newspaper, to the Humanities journal, to the magazine, a new age dawned for the future of The Flame with the launching of its official website, abtheflame.net. This is The Flame, the official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Arts and Letters.

FOUR PARTIES have so far expressed interest in purchasing Solidaridad, a decades-old bookstore and cultural landmark founded by the late National Artist for Literature F. Sionil José, his son said.

Antonio “Tonet” José, the late literary icon’s eldest son, said he and his siblings would wait for up to ten days for more potential buyers of the bookshop.

“As of now, there’s about four who are interested. So, we’re just waiting for the letter [of] intent to purchase,” he told The Flame.

A SCHOLARSHIP to be named after the late National Artist for Literature F. Sionil José will be created once Solidaridad, the iconic bookstore he founded in Manila, is sold, his son said.

In an interview, Antonio “Tonet” José, the eldest son of the late literary figure, said he and his siblings have agreed to use proceeds from Solidaridad’s sale to fund the scholarship.

“The money… (will) be put into a scholarship in his name…because we’re comfortable already, we don’t need the money,” Tonet told The Flame.

“We’re planning maybe two students a year… two or three who we will sponsor for the scholarship.”

The specifics of the scholarship are yet to be finalized, but the siblings are aiming to offer a 100% scholarship to selected students.

INDEPENDENCE OVER PROFIT

The decades-old bookstore Solidaridad founded by the late National Artist for Literature F. Sionil José is now up for sale, a sad scenario born out of a decision not to surrender its independence and identity as a cultural landmark.

While many were saddened by the present status of the iconic bookstore, it was preferred over income-augmenting measures that were seen to affect its reputation.

MANILA MAYOR Isko Moreno Domagoso sounded the alarm over the previous administration’s billions in debt along with questionable cash advances, a condition that he said placed the city’s finances in critical condition.

During his inaugural State of the City Address on Tuesday, July 1, Domagoso said the administration of former Manila mayor Sheilah “Honey” Lacuna had incurred a budget shortfall and had left behind P10.2 billion in unpaid obligations, including P3.2 billion that has been overdue for over a year.

NEWS UPDATE: Miscommunication among the family of the late F. Sionil José prompted them to retract earlier statements that the Solidaridad bookstore has been sold, the National Artist’s eldest son Antonio told The Flame.

Earlier today, the official page of Solidaridad clarified that the shop has not yet been sold and apologized to the media and the public for causing confusion.

The Flame and other media outlets reported yesterday that a deal has been struck to sell the cultural landmark for less than P35 million. The reports were based on interviews with Antonio.

Today, Inquirer Interactive Inc., which publishes Inquirer.net, assumes the publication of the iconic newspaper Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI).

The integration of the print and digital operations displaced several employees of PDI, the country's news agenda setter during its heyday.

“This shift is the best strategy to ensure that the Inquirer remains the leading source of news and content for Filipinos here and abroad,” the PDI Board said in a recent statement.

PDI was founded by Thomasian journalism icon Eugenia Apostol, Max Soliven, Luis Beltran, Arturo Borjal, Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc and Betty Go-Belmonte, who would later co-found The Philippine Star, another major newspaper.

"To our readers, rest assured that this is not a departure but a renewal. What changes is the mere structure of the paper; what remains is its proud mission—of delivering “Balanced News, Fearless Views” to Filipinos wherever they are," the Inquirer said.

WITH UST being the torchbearer for UAAP Season 88, fans can expect new venues, new sporting events and an opening ceremony held on campus grounds to kick off the University’s first hosting since 2016.

During the signing of the UAAP and Cignal TV contract extension, UST Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director Fr. Rodel Cansancio, O.P. said the league is willing to adjust its schedule should there be student-athletes suiting up for the national team this year.

“That’s the plan of the UAAP, especially events that are aligned with the national team, or for international competitions, because we exist for the national team,” Cansancio said on June 30 at the UST Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. building.
