The Flame

The Flame The official student publication of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters since 1964. Raymund de Peñafort building.

Independent journalism for the Artlets community, the University and the country. In 1964, with the merger of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and the College of Liberal Arts, the need for a publication that is to become the mouthpiece of the students arose, coupled with the restlessness of bearing the new identity of “Artlettes.”

Determined to unify the two reluctant University bodies, Rey

Datu, then Arts and Letters Student Council Vice President, became the first editor in chief of the campus newspaper that would soon be known as The Flame. The Flame, in its humble beginnings, was the child of mother publications Blue Quill and the Journal of Arts and Sciences. It eventually became part of the Artlet identity, on the lookout for the latest issues and trends prevailing in and around the Faculty, looking over student council elections, newly-implemented college policies, and curriculum revisions, among others. In the middle of the 1970s, with the full avowal of Proclamation No. 1081 as the law of the land, The Flame switched to another medium that would be the predecessor of the magazine known today, becoming the Journal of the Humanities which featured profound essays and articles solicited from the Artlet community. The publication was active in promulgating its opinions on issues regarding the government at this dark time in Philippine history, without compromising its role as a humanistic journal. Likened to Heraclitus’ symbol of motion by former Dean Magdalena Villaba-Cue, The Flame has developed a reputation for being a seeker of truth. The mood was carried over to the 1980s, a time characterized by issues of labor unions’ demonstrations, political unrest, and coups. The Flame endured to be the torch, blazing a trail that would become one of the hallmarks of the publication: fearless reportage. Battling against censorship, financial constraints, and fellow Artlets whose rebellious hunger for radical change slowly declined, The Flame continued to investigate the issues plaguing the country then. The publication released a lampoon issue titled The Phlegm, which satirized the general elections on May 11, 1992. The lampoon immortalized observed truths that stretched to become universal, and was asked to be taken in good humor and judgment. The Flame continued to defy conventions, adding to the continuous outpouring of talents trained under the guidance of literary giant former Dean Ophelia Dimalanta. With the turn of the next century, the headlines became inquisitive in search for answers. The Phlegm, Lagablab (the Filipino counterpart of the publication which put focus on national issues), and The Flame never wavered in challenging Artlets to become critical thinkers. The journal eventually transformed into more accessible glossy magazines that are readily available in the newsstands at the lobby of the St. To honor its golden anniversary, The Flame released a commemorative issue, intensifying its staffers and editors’ desire to serve the students and echo their sentiments to the administration. From the newspaper, to the Humanities journal, to the magazine, a new age dawned for the future of The Flame with the launching of its official website, abtheflame.net. This is The Flame, the official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Arts and Letters.

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas won 30 awards in the 11th edition of the Student Quill Awards, which honors exemplary work in communication research, programs, skills and creativity.

The Flame, the official student publication of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, was among the four UST organizations and publications that won plums in the awards program.

One of its two winning entries was the in-depth report, “From streets to sheets: Motorcycle drivers ride on s*x work as they traverse hard times,” which won in the writing category.

The story allowed The Flame to make history as the first campus publication from Asia to secure the top spot in the in-depth category’s regional division of the 2024 Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards.

UST JOURNALISM instructor and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Manuel Mogato has launched an expanded second edition of his book about his decades-long career as a journalist.

Titled “It’s Me Bok! A Memoir of a Filipino Journalist,” the second edition of the book was launched on Aug. 21 at the Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas, Manila.

“The second edition is an expanded version of the first, which was rushed. I had added the arrest of former president Duterte and an afterword from Secretary Teodoro. It’s a better version, including the fonts which are bigger than the first,” Mogato told The Flame.

Despite the difficulties he had in funding his self-published book, the veteran journalist said he was able to release 500 copies supplied by Central Books during the launch.

ANOTHER AWARD FOR STORY THAT BAGGED THE HISTORIC SPJ PLUM

JUST IN: The Flame’s in-depth story, “From streets to sheets: Motorcycle drivers ride on s*x work as they traverse hard times,” is among the 30 UST entries that won in the 11th Philippine Student Quill.

The story recently made history as the first from Asia to secure the top spot in the in-depth category of the 2024 Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards.

It was written by The Flame editor-in-chief Zoe Airabelle Aguinaldo, associate editor Joss Gabriel Oliveros, and staffers Jianzen Deananeas and Ma. Alyanna Selda.

Dapitan: Panopticon, The Flame’s literary folio, which tackles themes of surveillance and imprisonment, also reaps an accolade.

Aside from The Flame, four other UST entities bag recognition: Tiger Media Network, the official broadcasting arm of UST (13); UST’s official campus publication the Varsitarian (6); media production organization TOMCAT (3) and media entity TomasinoWeb (2). Four projects from the UST Communication department likewise obtain an award.

The ceremony will take place on Aug. 27 at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel.

ROOKIE SETTER Sam Panganiban is determined to uphold the legacy of UST Golden Spikers as veteran playmakers Dux Yumbao and Joshua Avila prepare to exit the team next year.

The 18-year-old newcomer officially joined the Tigers’ lair last Friday, Aug. 15, hoping to help secure a bright future for the squad.

With Yambao entering his final UAAP season, Panganiban has emerged as a potential heir to the main playmaker role. For the rookie, sharing the court with players he once only admired from the stands and on TV is both an honor and a source of pressure.

“I really looked up to them [Yambao and Avila] and now that I’m playing under them, it’s really pressuring to know that they’re graduating and I could potentially be the next main setter,” the Cagayan de Oro native told The Flame.

"We must not only preserve yesterday's heritage fight for today's ephemeral interests, but die if need be, for tomorrow's hopes," the late senator and opposition leader Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. said.

Forty-two years after his assassination, we honor Ninoy as an icon of democracy and resistance against dictatorship.

Let us keep his legacy alive by remaining vigilant against any attempt to curtail our rights and freedoms.
