On this day, we commemorate the 42nd anniversary of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.'s death. May this serve as a reverence to the hero who left a perpetual reminder of the importance of resisting fascism with a bold heart and courage.

To remember him is not enough. We, as Filipinos, can only truly give respect by embodying the characteristics that made him a hero in the first place: someone who dared to question the people in power and the unwavering belief that Filipinos are worth the sacrifices to achieve a better life for all.

The fight is not yet done. The legacy of Ninoy and every nameless hero who resisted the status quo will always live on—in our hearts, in our history, and in our country.

Every now and then, student journalists have remained steadfast in informing the student body and raising important matters beyond the school grounds in the midst of growing disinformation.

With the new Executive Committee members of A.Y. 2025-2026 leading the way, PUP Campus Journalists recommits to their duties as they finally enter a new era of becoming an independent publication. This significant shift is a defining moment for greater editorial freedom and stronger responsibility. They will continue the mission of truth-telling while embracing a deeper dedication to serve the university and the general public on their new journey.

The role of the free press has never been more critical. Thus, the PUP Campus Journalists is now more prepared to conquer the challenges and tell stories that matter through responsible journalism.

For the masses, we write. For the freedom of the press, we fight.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE SEPARATION OF PUP-CJS FROM THE CMO

The PUP Campus Journalists (PUP-CJs) was established under the Communication Management Office (CMO) of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and served as the official writing arm of The Pylon (PUP’s official newsletter) and PUP CreaTV (PUP’s online channel).

As the organization has continued to grow and expand throughout the years, it has also undergone reflections on its evolving direction and needs as a community of student journalists. On July 4, the outgoing and incoming Executive Committee for the Academic Year 2025-2026, after a series of consultations with the advisers, reached a collective decision for PUP-CJs and the CMO to formally part ways.

This step was taken since PUP-CJs did not fully meet and can no longer fulfill certain commitments to the CMO. In line with this, PUP-CJs will now operate as an autonomous student publication of PUP, and is no longer affiliated with the CMO, The Pylon, or PUP CreaTV.

As we embark on this new chapter, PUP-CJs remains committed to upholding our mission of amplifying the voices of the Iskolar ng Bayan and writing for the broader Filipino masses.

For the masses, we write. For the freedom of the press, we fight.

ICYMI | Following a dialogue with the University administration held on July 28, the PUP Office of the Student Regent (OSR), Sentral na Konseho ng Mag-aaral (SKM), and Local Student Councils (LSCs) addressed venue concerns regarding the 2025 Year-End Graduation in a press conference this afternoon.

In line with the ongoing renovation of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), it was discussed that the University Graduation Committee explored alternatives such as government-owned venues: the World Trade Center, which is only available in late October; the Philippine Sports Arena, which has ongoing sports training activities; and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, which is also undergoing renovations and may reopen by the end of the year.

The committee also inquired into privately owned venues: SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Arena, and Smart Araneta Coliseum, in which time constraints were stated and other schools have already booked the venues.

This led to a decision to make the PUP Gymnasium the final graduation venue, to be held on September 16 to 20.

Moreover, even among the available options, most privately owned venues exceed P4.5 million in cost, while the approved budget for the graduation venue is limited to P4 million.

As the representatives of the student sector for the graduation, Student Regent Troy Cabangon and SKM President Tiffany Faith Brillante assured that the preparations will be consultative, and that the venue will be made conducive and ventilated, catering to over 9,000 graduates for this year.

It was also stated that the P4 million budget will be used for logistics such as the LED wall, lights and sounds, food for guests, and the setup.

OPINION | Without real choice, there can be no real representation. And when power is left unchecked, it stops serving and starts performing—echoing loud noise in a glass tank, mistaking itself for the ocean.
