BREAKING: Makati Medical Center (MMC) releases statement denouncing Sen. Koko Pimentel for his “irresponsible and reckless action,” on Wednesday.

"He added to the burden of a hospital trying to respond to its most competent and aggressive manner to cope with the daunting challenges of this COVID-19 outbreak," MMC said in a statement.

After confirming he tested positive for COVID-19 in an interview with CNN Philippines, Senator Pimentel admitted he was at a hospital upon learning the result.

“Senator Pimentel violated his home quarantine protocol, entered the premises of the MMC delivery room, thus, unduly exposed healthcare workers to possible infection," said MMC.

The senator, who suffered mild symptoms, had himself tested on March 20 and learned of the result four days later.

Under Department of Health’s updated guidelines released on March 16, persons under investigation (PUI) must be in quarantine and isolation.

In the same guidelines, a PUI may only get tested if:
- they have severe symptoms
- they belong to the vulnerable population: elderly, pregnant women, those who are immunocompromised (weakened immune system due to underlying illnesses)

Below is a copy of MMC’s statement.

UPDATE: Sen. Koko Pimentel tests positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Pimentel said he was tested on March 20 and got the result on Tuesday.

"I was informed late last night March 24, 2020 that I have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The swab was taken last Friday, March 20, 2020," said Pimentel.

He also quarantined himself upon his doctor's advice following the Department of Health (DOH) protocol.

In an interview with CNN Philippines, however, he revealed that he was at a hospital with his pregnant wife Kathryna when he received the news.

This inadvertently put the medical workers inside the hospital at risk, but Senator Pimentel claimed he left immediately after learning he was positive.

The senator also said he only had mild symptoms before getting the results.

“Okay naman, I just have a slight sore throat. Walang fever, chills wala naman," he said in an interview.

According to testing guidelines released by the DOH on March 16, only persons under investigation (PUIs) with severe symptoms can be tested for COVID-19.

People who have two or all of the following are listed as PUIs
- History of travel in the past 14 days to countries with local transmission and risk of importation of the virus
- History of exposure with a confirmed case
- Has symptoms of respiratory illness (cough and/or colds) and/or fever

Elderly with symptoms either mild or severe, or have underlying illnesses can be tested immediately.

Pimentel is the second senator who tested positive for COVID-19 after Sen. Miguel Zubiri.
