Arts, Activism, and the Skirmishes They Ought to Win | Pura Luka Vega
Pura Luka Vega (@) , whose unorthodox artistry of a religious figure attracts criticisms, is redefining arts in its sanctity. Pura was propelled to be in the drag scene having played different characters when she was young, and cosplaying in college. This, for her, unearths something that's within oneself, exposes who you are on the inside, and puts into light your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
Her rebirth to drag, discovered by accident, rather stirs away from circumspection: "No one really has an exclusive ownership over the concept of Jesus, like any other character, I treat it with as much value."
Pura views Jesus as a supreme being who, if physically here, would side with the oppressed. So, her performances, beyond entertainment, are an avenue for all spectrums of emotion, of horrors and beauty. It's her way to story tell and speak to q***r people that they are valid, and the Almighty is with them. Although arrested and scrutinized, she however does not rue with what she did, if anything, she's glad to have uncovered the utter hypocrisy placed upon q***r people.
