| No Syllabus for Growing Up

Growing up happens quietly. It doesn’t manifest in a single day, but in the little shifts you hardly notice. It creeps up on you silently, and at some point, you’ll realize that you’re just a bit older than yesterday—with bigger responsibilities and harsher realities to meet.

One day, you’re wrapped in laughter and stories with friends, and the next you’re caught between goodbyes and new beginnings. It feels like stepping into a life you’ve been waiting for, but also leaving behind a version of yourself you didn’t know you’d miss.

𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲’𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄
The usual mornings before school, the places we thought we’d never leave, the friendships we swore would stay the same—what we thought to be the most superficial parts of our old selves ended up being the ones we’d long for the most. Funny how at some point, life revolved around recess bells, 3 PM merienda breaks, and scorching summer vacations. Suddenly, we’re here, standing at the edge of something bigger, carrying expectations heavier than our backpacks ever were.

𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲, 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀
College makes it easy to feel lost, like everybody else already knows where they’re headed and how they’d get there. But the truth is, no one ever really does. Some move faster, some slow, while a few stumble along the way—yet we’re all on the same endless journey. There’s comfort in knowing we travel different paths, yet the uncertainty of everything is the one thing we share.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘂𝘀
We tackle equations and essays, but life had more important lessons waiting. Turns out, we’d learn more on survival—how to live on budgeted needs, how to stretch our ‘baon’ to last for weeks, how to ask for help when pride becomes too heavy. The real lessons aren’t written on chalkboards, but in the way we struggle and yet somehow manage to thrive. True tests aren’t on paper either, rather embedded in the times we choose to keep going even when it feels easier not to.

𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁?
Honestly, I don’t know— and probably, neither would you. Having to move forward and embrace change unfolds slowly in the choices we make every day. And while we’re all busy on our own paths, maybe the real lesson is that it’s okay to not have it all figured out yet. What matters is that we keep moving, carrying with us the pieces of who we once were, trusting that somehow, the paths we take will lead us where we’re truly meant to be.

RESISTANCE AGAINST DICTATORSHIP!

On this day, we remember the voice of Ninoy Aquino, who echoed freedom and resistance against the Marcos Sr. regime.

The battles he fought ended his life 42 years ago, but they ignited change and served as an eye-opener for the Filipino people.

May his legacy continue to inspire us in our pursuit of and commitment to true freedom for our country!

OPINION | Critical hit for constructive criticisms

Reversed Pinocchio.

Who would have thought that sugar-coated comments and overly high ratings weren’t just a mere trend on an academic year? Telling the truth feels more like a liability that could change the course of your college journey.

Faculty evaluation is intended to assess how efficient your professor is during the semester in terms of their method of teaching, mastery of the subject, class management, and professionalism. These evaluations are necessary for their career and compensation improvement aligned with the Department of Budget and Management – Commission of Higher Education (DBM-CHED) Joint Circular No. 3, series of 2023, “Guidelines on the Reclassification of Faculty Positions in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs).”

However, these criteria are slowly losing their value, as the evaluation loses its essence. In fact, instead of using the comments for improvements, the supposed safe space for the students becomes corrupted so as not to hurt any egos of those people in power, putting the students on a chokehold.

This issue speaks volume, especially when the assessments are done before some professors have their first-ever class meeting. Concerns regarding academic retaliation arose as earlier compliance with faculty evaluation was issued. In many cases, if the professors knew the evaluation beforehand, they tend to make things a lot harder for the students, especially when giving projects and major examinations.

Several concerns about the early faculty evaluation during the first semester of academic year 2024-2025 last November 2024 were noted. One student said, “Mag-eeval agad, edi may time pa para bumawi yung mga prof sa ano – sa mga estudyante, [ma]gagalit na naman yan sila.”

Hearing the frustrations of the students, some will still argue that an early evaluation will help faculty personnel to improve along the way.

The intention of real-time evaluation is clear; however, an early assessment may be seen as premature. Imagine, how you could fairly rate someone you barely know and understand. Of course, we will not ignore the fact that there are still deserving professors for their exemplary service to the institutions.

Despite the assurance that the evaluation protects the anonymity of the students, the concern for backlash could not waver. One wrong choice of word from a student will greatly impact the whole class by these professors who misuse their power.

We cannot deny the fact that faculty evaluation is indeed necessary to maintain the quality of education in an institution, and effective implementation could be a better choice for both the students and professors. The assurance that a proper issuance time of evaluation could promote the idea of transparency, as well as fairness within the university.

Ironically, what was meant to be a haven for students voicing out the truth now feels more like walking on eggshells, trying not to hurt any fragile egos.

Stay informed as we explore pressing issues within and beyond our university in our upcoming Newsletter.

𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬: First Filipino Para-Archer to qualify for the Paralympics, Bronze Medalist – 2019 ASEAN Para Games (Mixed Compound), Bronze Medalist – 2023 Asian Para Archery Championships (Continental Qualifier), Philippine Flag Bearer – Paris 2024 Paralympics, Competitor – 2024 Summer Paralympics (Paris).

From silent struggles rose steady strength. A warrior forged by the mountains, her aim was not just for victory—but for history.

Agustina Maximo Bantiloc is a trailblazing Filipino para-athlete with a saga of determination, transformation, and triumph. From the rough mountains of Tanudan, Kalinga, to the global stage of the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Agustina's life is an improbable story of courage.

Born in 1968 and raised in a humble household, she had to experience life's struggles early. A spinal cord injury paralyzed her lower body — but not her will. Rather than quitting, she entered the world of para-sports, starting with powerlifting in 2003, transitioning to para-athletics, before finally discovering her calling in para-archery around 2011.

Coached by Jonathan Josol, Agustina trained in Baguio City, finding strength not just from the bowstring but from years of living through pain, getting up, and looking for a higher aim. She continuously made a name for herself in international competitions, winning medals for the Philippines in ASEAN and Asian para competitions.

In 2024, she made history as the first-ever Philippine para-archer to ever qualify for the Paralympic Games, participating in the compound open event in the Paris Paralympics at 56 years old — the oldest member of the Philippine team. She qualified not just by invitation, but by sweat and point, winning a bronze medal in the Asian Para Archery Continental Qualifier held in Thailand.

In the Paris Games, she fought tooth and nail, posting a season-high 618 in the ranking round and keeping pace against veteran international shooters. Although she did not go beyond the round of 32, her name was already in Philippine sports lore.

Carrying the Philippine flag with honor and pride together with swimmer Ernie Gawilan during the opening ceremony, Bantiloc represented more than being a representative — she was a symbol of what can be achieved when hope crosses paths with tenacity.

Presently residing in Baguio, Agustina still inspires athletes, particularly women and individuals with disabilities, reminding everyone that despite physical constraints, the human heart is limitless.

Challenges tested her strength, but they never clouded her focus. One woman from the highlands aimed with purpose — and made history.
