HISTORY

The Dawn is the official student publication of the University of the East (UE). Tracing its origins back in 1947—which is a year younger than the University itself, it is considered as one of the pioneers in serving as the students' voice and in delivering reports constructed substance over form. The Business College Journal spearheaded by PCCBA Manila student Howard Dee conceived and conceptualized in 1946. Dee handled the journal as it began to publish term papers, literary works, and faculty profiles. It was an ordinary newsletter until it made a new amendment during 1950 when the Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration was renamed the University of the East (UE). A name embodying the perseverance of night-owl writers who work and constantly beat the dawn just to publish an issue, Accountancy Vicente Mangawang gave the winning name "Dawn." The Dawn thrives as years fly by, protecting its values and integrity despite facing the most alarming chapters in the country's history. Being one of the newspapers allowed to operate during the repression of student councils and publications. During the 1970s, Dawn became the most circulated student newspaper in the Philippines. Eventually, in 1981, it joined a campaign to aid its fellow publications that were shut down in the orders of the Marcos Administration. For decades, the Dawn continues to witness the journey of the studentry and the fate of the country by producing proud journalists, public servants, and in the case of one, even a national artist. Truly, the road it follows is no exemption from rocks and hurdles. However, the footprints left behind by its predecessors remind the Dawners of their purpose to keep the dawn rising in the East. (The history of The Dawn was printed in its 70th-anniversary magazine's article entitled, "The Chronicles of The Dawn.")

To deepen students’ understanding of corruption and good governance, the University of the East (UE)-Manila College of Education (CEduc) hosted the “Ika-7 Huwag Kang Ku-Corrupt!” panel discussion today, October 7, at the IRC, CEduc Building, UE Manila.

Held as part of the college’s 76th founding anniversary celebration, the event gathered students, faculty members, and professionals to discuss the issue of corruption from academic, civic, and professional perspectives.

Among the panelists were UE College of Law (CLaw) alumnus Atty. Jimmy Bondoc, UE Manila Chancellor Dr. Louie Divinagracia, Dr. Levi Elipane, and Research Associate John Coby Cabuhat.

The panel sparked mixed reactions within and beyond the UE community, particularly due to the participation of Bondoc, a known supporter of former president Rodrigo Duterte who has previously faced corruption allegations.

Addressing the controversy, CEduc Dean Dr. Eva Aurora Callueng emphasized that a discourse requires openness to differing perspectives.

“In a discourse, no one is forcing you to believe what others say—it’s about listening and thinking critically about what ‘others’ may say,” she said in an exclusive interview with the DAWN.

She further highlighted the importance of diversity in discussions, warning against forming “echo chambers” where only similar opinions are entertained.

“If we refuse to listen to those we consider different from us, we reduce or dehumanize them to beings of lesser value only because they don’t share the same thoughts with us,” Callueng stated.

The dean also urged attendees to reflect, saying, “Tanungin natin ang ating mga sarili, sino ba ang tunay na kaaway natin?” before quoting Philippine hero Gen. Antonio Luna: “May mas malaking kaaway ang mga Pilipino, ang kanyang sarili.”

Additionally, Callueng shared that the alumnus was suggested to guest by the UE CLaw Dean Atty. Viviana Paguirigan.

‘SANA HINDI TAYO MAKALIMOT’

Warrior and celebrity-influencer Awra Briguela shared her hopes that Filipinos will not forget the rampant corruption in the government despite the long hearings with no one being held accountable.

Briguela was spotted at the student-led anti-corruption walkout protest today, October 8, at the University of the East (UE)-Manila.

“Parang nangyari na ‘to eh, paulit ulit na lang—maghihearing saglit tapos tatakpan ng panibagong isyu para makalimutan ng mga tao ‘yung totoong nangyari,” she expressed when asked about corruption, in an exclusive interview with the DAWN.

“Pero sana, this time talaga, hindi makalimot ang bawat Pilipino,” Awra added, saying that Filipinos deserve for their hard-earned taxes to be put to good use.

The Warrior-celebrity also expressed her joy seeing her fellow UE students show up with courage and standing up against corruption.

Students rallied at the University of the East (UE)-Manila Lepanto Gate urging the administration to let Warriors protest against corruption in the S.H. Loyola Street.

As of 2:01 p.m., students are still not allowed to pass through the gate as security personnels formed a human barricade along the Lepanto Gate.

However, according to the UE security chief, the officers leading the protest and the admin have agreed to only stay within campus grounds.
