HISTORY

The Dawn is the official student publication of the University of the East (UE). Tracing its origins back in 1947—which is a year younger than the University itself, it is considered as one of the pioneers in serving as the students' voice and in delivering reports constructed substance over form. The Business College Journal spearheaded by PCCBA Manila student Howard Dee conceived and conceptualized in 1946. Dee handled the journal as it began to publish term papers, literary works, and faculty profiles. It was an ordinary newsletter until it made a new amendment during 1950 when the Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration was renamed the University of the East (UE). A name embodying the perseverance of night-owl writers who work and constantly beat the dawn just to publish an issue, Accountancy Vicente Mangawang gave the winning name "Dawn." The Dawn thrives as years fly by, protecting its values and integrity despite facing the most alarming chapters in the country's history. Being one of the newspapers allowed to operate during the repression of student councils and publications. During the 1970s, Dawn became the most circulated student newspaper in the Philippines. Eventually, in 1981, it joined a campaign to aid its fellow publications that were shut down in the orders of the Marcos Administration. For decades, the Dawn continues to witness the journey of the studentry and the fate of the country by producing proud journalists, public servants, and in the case of one, even a national artist. Truly, the road it follows is no exemption from rocks and hurdles. However, the footprints left behind by its predecessors remind the Dawners of their purpose to keep the dawn rising in the East. (The history of The Dawn was printed in its 70th-anniversary magazine's article entitled, "The Chronicles of The Dawn.")

𝐋𝐞𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 👋💡

Today we celebrate the roughly 10% of the world who sketch, swing, and sign their legacy with the left hand.

From Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpieces, to Marie Curie’s groundbreaking discoveries, to Barack Obama’s transformative leadership, to Lady Gaga’s fabulous artistry, and to Manny Pacquiao’s pride and dominance as a southpaw, left-handers have made their mark across art, science, politics, and culture.

They navigate a world built for the right with clever hacks, quick adaptability, and a signature flair that turns obstacles into opportunities.

Try switching hands for a day and see the world from their angle, you might just unlock a new way of thinking!

Happy International Left-Handers Day to those proving every day that different is brilliant! 👆🤞

𝗕𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗸𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻? 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗺𝗶 𝗿𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻! 🚍

Today, we celebrate the TDH of our world: Transformative? Check! Determined? Check! Hopeful? Check!

We were once told that our generation was too sensitive and just different from what was once expected—and maybe that’s what makes our youth heroic.

In a constantly changing world, the youth transforms as well, and alongside that change is a future transpiring to become different too.

Let’s take this moment to salute to our young hands—the activists, the uplifters, the dreamers, and even the yearners, for even if they seem too small a step; they are a part of a giant leap not only for a brighter tomorrow, but for a yesterday to look back on and a today to learn something from.

As the world progresses, we should acknowledge their voices and let them hear as well that we stand and believe in them; because in this journey, there is always space for enthusiastic minds.

So, to the youth? Live for the hope of it all. Always look forward, do not stop believing. We all have a little “I want to change the world” within us, and indeed it starts with you.

Happy International Youth Day, Warriors! Tag a Youngster that inspires you! 🫵

BREAKING | PATHFIT uniform now allowed for whole day

The University of the East (UE) announced that college students enrolled in Physical Activities Towards Health and Fitness (PATHFIT), formerly physical education (PE), are now allowed to wear their PATHFIT uniform for the whole day inside the campus.

According to the Student Affairs Office (SAO)-Manila, the permission is “effective this [first] semester unless changed.”

Hence, students wearing PATHFIT uniform will also be allowed to attend their other academic classes and to enter in the libraries.

Students may also change to any UE shirt, organization, or white shirt after their PATHFIT classes.

However, the special permission is only given to students during their scheduled PATHFIT days.

The announcement was released by SAO, dated August 8 and signed by Director Edilina Baldoza from the Manila campus and UE Caloocan’s Dir. Clemente Diwas.

UNIVERSITY NEWS | Central Board calls to resched post-exam async sessions

Advocating for student welfare, the Central Board has requested the University of the East (UE) to move the asynchronous sessions after exams to August 25 to 27 subsequent to the rescheduling of the preliminary exam week.

To recall, the prelim exams were moved to Aug. 18 to 26 as response to the petition, to give more time for students and faculty to catch up on lessons after the week-long class suspensions due to the onslaught of Habagat and multiple tropical storms.

In their letter, the Central Board stated that scheduling the asynchronous sessions would allow students to recover from academic fatigue and support their mental health and well-being.

They also added that it would give more time for faculty members to assess students and compute grades, as well as prepare for the midterms.

As of writing, the University has yet to announce the reimplementation of the asynchronous classes after prelim exams.

[Editor’s Note: The Central Board is composed of the Central Student Council officers and college-based student council presidents from the Caloocan campus.]

ALL EYES ON UAAP 👀❤️‍🔥

The much-awaited UAAP Season 88 will officially blast off on September 19, with host school University of Sto Tomas (UST) igniting the action at its Manila campus.

Themed "Strength in Motion, Hope in Action," the festivities will open with a mass and an opening program as well as a high-energy concert at the iconic UST Field.

“We really want to do it again sa University ‘cause we really want to share all of the traditions that we have,” said UAAP Board of Managing Directors member Gilda Kamus.

“It’s something that we want them to experience, how we do things in the university like Paskuhan or the Thomasian Welcome Walk,” she added.

UST’s last hosting was in Season 79, which had a grand opening at the historic Plaza Mayor in 2016.

With the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship 2025 set for September and the Southeast Asian Games in December in Thailand, the UAAP calendar is bracing for a tight squeeze.

The World Championship will use the Smart Araneta Coliseum and SM Mall of Asia Arena, while several other major venues will serve as training sites.

To work around the packed venue schedule, UST is eyeing the Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena and the newly-renovated ADMU’s Blue Eagle Gym as possible sites for the opening games of the collegiate basketball tournaments.

The league has yet to announce the schedule for the season’s headline, the Men’s Basketball Tournament.

RED AND READY 🏀🔴

Carrying the pride of Lualhati, the UE men’s basketball team is primed for battle in the 37th Promotion Cup International Basketball Tournament, taking place on August 12 to 16 in Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province, China.

The Red Warriors will face a strong mix of professional and developmental squads from various countries, including China’s Heilongjiang Youth Team, Liaoning Project, and Jilin Northeast Tigers, as well as Habas from Russia and the Malaysia Selection Team.

This marks the first international campaign for the Red Warriors under the leadership of head coach Chris Gavina.

With the UAAP season fast approaching, Gavina underscored that the China tournament will serve as crucial preparation for their campaign.

“This international tournament will surely foster camaraderie and team chemistry through the shared experience of representing UE and the Philippines on an international stage,” he shared.

“[It will] build mental toughness and confidence that will carry over to our UAAP campaign,” coach added.

The UAAP Season 88 is set to commence in September, with UST serving as host for the season.

𝗔 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ✊

Despite the world always drowning them out, Indigenous people have always taught themselves how to swim.

With resilience and grace, each stroke is a testament to every effort they did to remain relevant, in a world that strives to downplay the songs of their boundless spirits.

For too long, the world has aimed to make them relics of the past. Yet, they push through the current, like courageous salmon pushing past the prevailing tide with grace and determination.

On this day, we are not here to celebrate the umbrella term of “Indigenous.”

We celebrate the Aetas, Mangyans, Sami, Batu people, and countless others—who have names, practices, and stories that have long been washed out.

So let us stand in solidarity with the world's warriors, whose lives have been bleached out and reduced to mere footnotes and cartoon caricatures.

Let us ensure that their voices are woven into the fabric of our history.

Happy World Indigenous Peoples' Day, Warriors! 🔴⚪
