ZOIDS Turns 43: The Metal Beasts That Refused to Rust
Launched in September 1983, ZOIDS began as a strange little experiment from TOMY.
Four decades later, its legacy is more than nostalgia because of the craftsmanship, imagination, and patience we all learned as kids, when we were building our own Liger Zero.
At its height, ZOIDS ruled toy aisles and imagination alike. The Shield Liger became its poster child, all sleek armor and lion fury. The Liger Zero followed, customizable and endlessly cool, while Blade Liger, Gojulas, and Command Wolf turned every bedroom floor into a battlefield.
More than "toys," they were trophies, monuments to patience, obsession, and one too many missing screws.
Now at 43 years old, ZOIDS stands as one of Japan’s longest-living toy legacies, outlasting trends, fads, and half the consoles that tried to replace it.
It’s a reminder that sometimes, the things we build with our hands end up building us right back.
