President Boakai Submits Bills to Establish War Crimes and Anti-Corruption Courts

Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Boakai has officially submitted two landmark bills seeking the establishment of a National Anti-Corruption Court and a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.

The proposed legislations, now before the National Legislature, represent a major step in the government’s efforts to strengthen accountability, combat corruption, and address longstanding calls for justice over alleged war-era atrocities and economic crimes.

The two bills submitted by the President include:

1. An Act Establishing a War and Economic Crimes Court

2. An Act Adopting a New Title 17(a) of the Liberian Code of Laws Revised, Establishing a National Anti-Corruption Court

The proposed War and Economic Crimes Court is expected to address serious crimes committed during Liberia’s civil conflict, including alleged human rights violations and economic offenses linked to the war period.

Meanwhile, the proposed National Anti-Corruption Court aims to create a specialized judicial mechanism dedicated to prosecuting corruption-related offenses and strengthening transparency and accountability within public institutions.

The move comes amid increasing domestic and international pressure for Liberia to take decisive action against corruption and impunity.

If passed by the Legislature, the two courts could mark one of the most significant judicial and governance reforms in Liberia’s post-war history.

Almost 10 years ago, I started a journey I wasn’t sure I would ever finish. There were moments I had to pause, moments I doubted myself and moments life said, “not now.” But through all of it, I held on to one thing; the belief that one day, I would walk across that stage.

On May 28, I will graduate from Harvard with a Master’s Degree in Data Science / Machine Learning Engineering. Even writing those words feels emotional. HARVARD!!! Ten years later. ME.?!!

And the truth is, I did not get here alone. There were people who stood by me when things were uncertain.
People who reminded me who I was when I forgot.
People who believed in me even when the path did not make sense.

And among those people, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai became a special source of strength for me. In many ways, he became a father figure during some of the hardest moments of this journey. When life felt heavy and the dream felt distant, he reminded me who I was and made sure I finished.

This degree belongs to him and to everyone who prayed for me, encouraged me, checked on me, and carried me through moments I thought I would not survive.

So today, I’m doing something that feels deeply personal. I am committing 1,000,000 Liberian Dollars to support students who had to stop their college journey, but still dream of finishing.

Because I know what it feels like to almost give up.
I know what it feels like to be delayed, not denied.
And I know how powerful it is when someone believes in you at the right time.

If that’s you or someone you know, please reach out.
It is not too late. I know because I almost didn't make it either.
