Jenine Desiderio Opens Up About Painful Estrangement With Daughter Janella Salvador
During her interview with Aster Amoyo, veteran actress and singer Jenine Desiderio opened up about one of the most painful chapters of her life — the period when she became estranged from her daughter, actress Janella Salvador.
Jenine revealed that even during Janella's younger years, she always wanted her daughter to have a relationship with her father despite their separation. She shared that she made efforts to ensure Janella would be able to appreciate and witness her father's talent as a performer, believing it was important for her daughter to create meaningful memories with him.
However, years later, their own mother-and-daughter relationship faced a difficult challenge.
According to Jenine, the conflict began after she posted a vague message on social media expressing frustration about someone being "stubborn." Although she never mentioned any names, many netizens assumed she was referring to Janella, causing the issue to quickly gain attention online.
"The public attached their own interpretation to my post and made me look like the bad person," Jenine shared. "I was labeled as an overprotective mother who was out of line for posting on social media."
Jenine clarified that she never intended to shame or embarrass her daughter. As a single parent who had spent years raising her children on her own, she explained that there were many moments when she had no one to talk to and no partner to help her navigate difficult decisions.
"I wasn't venting about Janella," she explained. "I simply expressed my feelings. Unfortunately, people connected it to her and turned it into something much bigger than it really was."
The misunderstanding eventually led to a painful estrangement between mother and daughter. Jenine believes Janella was still very young at the time and was surrounded by people whose opinions only intensified the situation.
"Instead of helping us reconcile, other people became the wedge that drove us apart," she said.
The separation took a heavy emotional toll on her. Jenine recalled a particularly heartbreaking Christmas when she chose not to attend a family reunion after learning that Janella and her then-boyfriend would be there.
Although she wanted her daughter to spend time with relatives and cousins she was close to, Jenine admitted feeling deeply hurt and believed her privacy had been invaded while she was being unfairly judged by the public.
Rather than risk creating tension during the holiday gathering, she quietly went home.
That night became one of the darkest moments of her life.
Jenine revealed that she cried herself to sleep and even dreamed of her late father, who passed away in 2011.
"I fell asleep crying nonstop. I was alone, curled up in bed while the rest of the world was celebrating Christmas," she recalled.
For nearly two years, mother and daughter barely spoke.
Despite the distance, Jenine said a mother's intuition never disappeared. Even during their estrangement, she often sensed when something was wrong with Janella and continued to care about her well-being from afar.
Eventually, circumstances brought them back together. As Janella matured, built her own life, and later became a mother herself, the two slowly began repairing the bond they had lost.
"We rebuilt the relationship that we lost," Jenine said. "We're trying to fill it now with good and positive memories."
Looking back, Jenine described the entire experience as deeply traumatic and one she never wants to relive.
"It was a very painful time. There are so many things that can no longer be said. It was traumatic even for me as a person," she admitted.
Today, Jenine says the experience taught her the importance of preserving relationships and choosing reconciliation whenever possible.
"It's a place I never want to go back to," she said. "At all costs, I would rather save a relationship for whatever it's worth."
