NO PH UNIVERSITIES IN ASIA’S TOP 500 FOR THE FIRST TIME — THE 2025 RANKINGS REVEAL SHARP DECLINE
For the first time in history, no Philippine university made it to the top 500 of the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings, marking a significant setback for the country’s higher education sector.
In the 2025 edition released on April 24, top local institutions Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines slipped to the 501–600 bracket, with Ateneo dropping from the 401–500 tier last year. De La Salle University fell even further, joining Mapúa University, University of Santo Tomas (UST), and Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in the 601+ category.
Despite the national slide, UST emerged as the second-highest ranked school in the country, thanks to strong scores in international outlook, as well as improvements in research and teaching performance.
A total of 853 universities from 35 countries were ranked, with China dominating the top 10 — a clear indication of the growing competition in Asia’s academic landscape. Meanwhile, 15 other Philippine universities were listed as “reporters,” meaning they submitted data but did not meet ranking criteria.
