“Obviously, every team’s goal is to win a title/championship. In our team’s case, winning is not our only goal, but the legacy we leave behind, which is going to be a testament to what kind of players we played as. Specifically, in the kind of student-athletes Saint Jude produces and what kind of people we are.”

Welcome to the Green Knights Diaries, as Paolo Koh provides insights into the summer training of the SJCS Men’s Basketball team, players to look out for in the coming competitions, and the goals for the team throughout the school year.

BREAKING NEWS: Classes Suspended on August 22, 2025.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso announced today, August 22, 2025, the suspension of face-to-face classes in all levels, both public and private schools, starting at 12:00 n.n.

This order came upon the recommendation of the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MCDRRMO) due to moderate to heavy rains affecting the city.

In line with the directive, Saint Jude Catholic School (SJCS) issued Director’s Advisory No. 10 s. 2025-2026. Adjustments have been made to lunch schedules and student dismissal times to ensure the safe return of students to their homes.

Afternoon face-to-face classes for the Early Childhood Department are likewise suspended. Onsite work operations at SJCS will end at 1:00 p.m.

Stay safe, Judenites!

LOOK: SJCS Holds Fire Drill

Saint Jude Catholic School conducted a fire drill for S.Y. 2025–2026 on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

The drill began with a 30-second fire alarm to simulate an emergency, prompting students, teachers, and staff to carry out evacuation procedures. In preparation, classes were reminded to review the Earthquake and Fire Preparedness Guide as well as the Emergency Evacuation Plans posted across campus.

Fire drills are held to train the school community to respond quickly, calmly, and safely in case of a real fire. By practicing evacuation procedures, the activity helps reduce panic and ensures that everyone is familiar with the safest routes and actions to take in the event of an emergency.

The activity was organized by the SJCS Incident Command System (SJCS-ICS) Team.

Coral Reef Restoration: A New Beginning for Environmentalism?

Coral reefs are the epitome of Mother Nature’s interconnectedness and balance. Brimming with life and diversity, these underwater ecosystems are built upon the foundation of thousands of polyps: miniature animals producing calcium carbonate, a chemical compound pivotal to the development of a coral’s tough skeleton. With the presence of microscopic algae in their cells, these Cnidarians are proven partakers of photosynthesis, a process which, in return, provides the polyps with food. Not to mention, these “rainforests of the sea” are home to all sorts of marine life, ranging from the smallest unicellular organisms to countless species of fish.

Despite their biological significance, countless hectares of coral reefs remain unprotected at a global scale. Many reefs face looming threats manifested in the forms of unethical fishing, ocean acidification, algal blooms, and more. An issue of higher concern, however, is coral bleaching: an indirect result of climate change. As a response to rising sea temperatures, corals get “stressed” and eject their zooxanthellae (microscopic algae), depriving themselves of their major source of food and color—hence the name “coral bleaching.”

When put together, these challenges can only mean one thing for coral reefs: unprecedented death.

This is where coral reef restoration comes into play. Since different coral species reproduce either sexually or asexually, the key to harnessing reef restoration is understanding their biology. Through gathering coral gametes or damaged fragments and using this as a starting point to rebuild debilitated ecosystems, researchers are capable of kickstarting coral populations that were once deteriorating: a slow and steady process. But how exactly does this happen?

Gilas Pilipinas Bows Out of FIBA Asia Cup

Gilas Pilipinas concluded their 2025 FIBA Asia Cup aspirations with a tough battle against Australia, losing 84–60 last August 13, 2025, at the King Abdullah Sports Center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The loss comes just one day after a never-say-die victory against host Saudi Arabia, beating them 95–88.

Against Saudi Arabia, the game was a tense back-and-forth battle, with both teams matching each other in scoring. Muhammed-Ali Abdur Rahkman of Saudi Arabia led the hosts with 33 points, on top of his 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Luckily, the Philippines had a savior in Justin Brownlee, coming through with 29 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. With just 3.7 seconds left in regulation, Brownlee stepped up to even the score to 79–all, sending it into overtime, before Quiambao buried two threes during extra time to overcome Saudi Arabia.

This win sent Gilas Pilipinas into the quarterfinals, where they faced the top-7 ranked team in the world, Australia. The Boomers went hot early, outscoring the Philippines 29–12 by the end of the first quarter, and by halftime, the deficit had grown to 20 points, with a score of 48–28. The match sadly ended with the Boomers winning 84–60, with Quiambao scoring 17 points and notching 4 rebounds.

Despite the loss, Gilas Pilipinas advanced further than in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup, where they suffered an early round of 16 exit, which marked the first time they failed to reach the quarter finals in 15 years. This year’s run, however, showed signs of progress that could build momentum for upcoming tournaments.

Good job, Gilas Pilipinas! We are all proud of your efforts!

LOOK: Judenites Shine in INSO 2025

Two Judenites proudly represented the Philippines in the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) 2025, delivering outstanding performances in the prestigious global competition held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, last July 30 – August 6, 2025.

Wins Keinrich Chen (IBY2) secured a gold medal while Shaun Mannix Yap ( Batch '25) earned a silver medal.

They were joined by Jeremiah Auza and Nouel Christian Amaguin from the PSHS system who finished with silver distinctions as well.

The INSO gathered student participants from around the world to test their knowledge in nuclear science, including topics in radiation, energy, and medical applications.

The students were trained and endorsed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), who praised their success as a promising sign for the country’s future in STEM.

LOOK: Moderators Introduce Clubs as Judenites Gather for the Club Orientation

Judenites flocked to the Fr. Peter Yang, SVD Hall to attend the annual Junior High School Club Orientation, last August 13, 2025. In the event, all club moderators used their unique ways to persuade the students to join their club, from teaser videos to open interviews.

In JHS, every student is required to join at least one main extracurricular club, with more than 20 clubs ranging from appreciation of Chinese and Filipino culture to science and mathematics. Every club has a story and a mission, allowing Judenites to grow and prosper.

Similar to the last few years, the Judenites Editorial Board and Student Council members are not obliged to join or be affiliated with other clubs; they must attend their respective group meetings. Additionally, sign-up times will be divided into two, with 2:10 - 2:45 p.m. for Grade 7-8 students, and 2:45 - 3:10 p.m. for Grade 9-10 students. Signups will be on a first-come, first-served basis. On top of this, quotas were set on the number of students a club may accept per grade level:

Grade 7 - 11 students
Grade 8 - 9 students
Grade 9 - 8 students
Grade 10 - 10 students

Best of luck, Judenites!
