Born into a world marked by cruelty and harshness, Jorge Mario Bergolioโthe man the world would come to know as Pope Francisโwas born on December 17, 1936, and lived a life dedicated to faith and worship. He lived his life with a quiet resilience that would one day shape the Catholic Church and touch hearts across the globe. From the bustling streets of Argentina to the solemn halls of the Vatican, he carried unbreakable love in his heart, walking a journey guided by a steadfast devotion to faith and service. He spread the Word of God to all who would listen, while living by the motto: โMiserando atque eligendoโโmeaning, โBy having mercy and by choosing.โ These words were not mere ornaments of his office, but the compass by which he navigated his entire life.
A man of simplicity, Pope Francis walked with the humble and sat with the broken. He gave his heart, not just for the powerful halls of the Vatican, but for the poor and wounded, and for those the world has long forgotten. With every act of kindness and every embrace he offered to a stranger, he reminded the world that the Church was not a throne for judgement, but a home for the lost.
Though he often wore white robes, his hands were never clean of work. He handed himself to the dirt and ashes of human struggle to reach for the light. He visited prisoners, spoke to refugees, and sympathized with those whose hearts were full of grief. He walked among the people not as a king, but as a brother. He was a Pope who had unwavering support for all people, regardless of background. No matter what race, gender, or sexuality, he welcomed them all with open arms. As both the first ever pope to come from Latin America and the first Jesuit pope, he served as the living proof that tradition could meet change, and that the present can heal from the past.
Although he was not perfect, his heart was powerful in his love. In a world shattered by noise, he stood quietly with conviction. His voice echoed through the walls of silence, not because he was loud, but because he embodied the word of God, with all of its conviction. He called not just for belief, but for taking actionโfor love that healed, for faith that stayed.
Now, the mantle passes to Pope Leo XIVโborn Robert Francis Prevost in the vibrant heart of Chicago, a man whose life has been a testament to both cultural richness and spiritual depth. With roots in both the United States and Peru, Pope Leo brings to the papacy a global perspective shaped by years of missionary work and service among the poor. His choice of name, Leo, pays tribute to Pope Leo XIII, a historic voice for social justice, and hints at the strength and moral clarity he now brings to the Church. As the first American pope, Leo XIV steps into the role not just as a leader, but as a bridge between continents, generations, and beliefs. Where Francis whispered healing into wounds with mercy, Leo speaks with the bold urgency of a world in crisis. His papacy begins with a promise: to preserve the heart of the Church while guiding it courageously into an uncertain future.
Rest in Peace, Pope Francis (17th of December, 1936โ21st of April, 2025).
