BANGKOK, THAILAND. Wilbert B. Wanas, Master Teacher from Barangay Guinaoang in Mankayan, Benguet, received the Most Outstanding Research Presenter award during the 6th International Multidisciplinary Conference on Research and Education held at Prince Palace Hotel in Bangkok from November 6 to 8.

Wanas presented his research titled Dayas: Gendered Roles of Women in Selected Small Scale Mining Communities of Mankayan, Benguet. The study focuses on the role of women in the practice of dayas or traditional community based gold processing. The research highlights that women perform important responsibilities in daily labor, household management, and decision making that support the continuity of mining livelihoods.

Researchers and scholars from different countries attended the conference to exchange studies aligned with current global issues. During the presentation of research findings, Wanas earned the Second Place Best Paper citation. Aside from presenting his study, he also served as a judge in the poster presentation category and participated as a discussant in a roundtable session on research collaboration and practice.

The recognition in Bangkok follows earlier achievements by Wanas in international academic gatherings. He received research citations in Malaysia in February and in Vietnam in May, where his study on local community experiences was also noted.

According to Wanas, the research will be prepared for publication to help broaden awareness of the contributions of women in small scale mining communities and to add to ongoing discussions on community based labor systems.
