Waves of passion and commitment to truth and transparency warmed the hearts of Central Mindanao University (CMU) campus journalists as they united at the University Convention Center (UCC) for the much-awaited University Press Conference (UPC) on December 10, 2024, with the theme, "Piercing through Layers of Misinformation and Media Bias," spearheaded by CMU's official student publication, The Central Post.
The UCC was filled with uproar as each college publication presented their yells and chants, and The Gateway emphasized that, as the defending champion, they would be defending their crown.
Following the yells and chants was the introduction of this year’s guest speaker, Cartoonist Zach of Cartoonist for Peace, who emphasized that artists, writers, and researchers can work hand in hand and "ideas will always triumph over aesthetic." He also urged the audience to go beyond the noise on social media and delve deeper into more important issues.
After the giving of token and plaque, former The Central Post News Editor and NSPC Qualifier, Melmar Fasonilao, led the Journalist’s Creed, followed by the announcements and the contest proper itself.
The atmosphere in each contest room was electric as participants poised their pens ready, with great anticipation marked on their faces. Some exchanged nervous but excited glances, while others were immersed in silent focus, mentally preparing for the challenges ahead. The thrill of competing in their chosen categories and the promise of showcasing their skills kept their determination to excel.
Meanwhile, excitement filled the UCC as the countdown for the live performance from the aspiring radio broadcasters began. The teams from the nine colleges competed as they showcased their creativity and talent in scriptwriting and delivering relevant news reports, features, and infomercials.
The radio broadcasting team from The Nightingale of the College of Nursing (CON) triumphed as the 1st place, The Engyneour’s Digest of the College of Engineering (COE) as the 2nd place, and The Executive Page of the College of Business and Management (CBM) landed in 3rd place.
The memorable event concluded as The Executive Page dominated, swept multiple categories, and took home an impressive haul of gold medals. They were hailed as the UPC 2024 overall champion, followed by The Gateway of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) as 1st runner-up, and The Nightingale as 2nd runner-up.
