Is the Bangsamoro a security risk for journalists?

On Thursday, Jan 25, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) conducted in Iligan City a Round Table Discussion on Strengthening Press Freedom in the Bangsamoro region.

This roundtable discussion aims to openly identify the various challenges faced by journalists covering the Bangsamoro Region and exploring actionable solutions.

Out of the discussion, there was one sad reality that occurred to my mind. Based on presentations made by most participant media practitioners, the Bangsamoro autonomous region seemed almost unnoticed of its existence. They accepted they need to know more about Bangsamoro .

Among the challenges facing journalists, especially non-Muslim journalists living outside the region is security concern. Many are afraid to cover the area out of fear for their lives.

But I think media practitioners are more secured in the Bangsamoro autonomous region than in some parts of the country. It means there is more press freedom in the Bangsamoro.

Fear of media coverage within the Bangsamoro region by non-Muslim journalists is not so well founded.. While there had been some isolated killings of media practitioners in nearby region 10, there is none in the Bangsamoro area. So why fear to give enough media coverage in the region?

The Dilemma of the Mindanao War

So much of the trauma has by far been the narrative describing the conflict that engulfed Mindanao in a war which from my own simple assessment, could have been avoided or a fracas easily avoidable had there been ‘honesty’ in manners of the international community stomping foot down harder, to stopping it.

Like the immersing in simple diplomacy; merely because the conflict drawdown was something of territories, definitely not a rebellion of the Muslims -a job the UN is mandated to do. Thus, a Bangsamoro issue, becoming a problem needing, as hollered high and mighty, to naturally require a Bangsamoro solution. It is the ‘official’ depiction as far as the Filipino government insisting it is a Muslim problem henceforth an intervention of the international community, particularly the United Nations, may ‘not’ be necessary.

To dig deeper into the abyss over the solution to the now Bangsamoro problem, no less the Malaysian premier and counterpart Filipino head of state moving the heavens coming up with resolutions and did come up with something, a Bangsamoro solution now reemerging as BARMM from what was ARMM. Fine, it is now up and working. But where would the Sabah Claims be? Seemingly out of mind since the Muslim problem has now been ‘dealt with’ so we stay quiet, nay be there oddities still to schedule like the Sabah Claims issue. Would this be the right attitude given the so alarmingly dangerous radicalization of Muslims this time all over the world, from what was a problem of territories between Malaysia and the Philippines easily discernible I’m sure the UN could have easily handled, but bewilderingly, did not.

As far as I know, only PM Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia has it to say, let us handle the Sabah Claims issue. So, what now?

Mindanao War is not to say it is a Muslim rebellion but really was a military countermeasure not to poke at the Mindanao people, and blame them for rebellion. It should have been the United Nations on their mandated duty to intervene to stop it because it was to have been a dispute over territories between two card-bearing members of the UN which was the Sabah claims issue. Worst of all, the MNLF hijacked the problem and took it their own so they couldn’t do anything because it was never a rebellion. This was the Sabah claims in fact the one that created the Mindanao war.

That’s why from MNLF, M**F, ABU SAYAFF, ISIS, and what’s next? Of course, it will not end because it is not our rebellion in Mindanao.

Did you know that the Philippines attempted to invade Malaysia? But it backfired and it ended up with decades of rebellions and conflict in the Philippines! ...

Recognizing a ‘giant bully’ crying over the loss of the USSR?

Crying over spilled milk, or scooping with bare hands shows bravado, slurp the wastes show machismo has never been observed among known Marxists. Especially brooding over ‘lost’ grounds. Marxists have long been known as fatalists; never knew dictatorship from authoritarianism having themselves been orientated one-party rulers. The Russian interlude with ‘the only them mantra’ following the collapse of the USSR to have tasted a bit of freedom as a democracy, with the USSR breaking up, the way their having gotten used to being single-minded as Marxists, democracy for them was indeed new and yet to fully grasp especially having to engage in elections. So the idea of Putin, a former KGB officer, as Russian president, was never far off.

Okay, clenching the Russian presidency, and obviously familiar with the ‘Russian thinking’ as a KGB guy, he juggled with the system and was successful with it, jumped from one end to the other with hardly the world noticing. Challenged the West with the Russian firebrand violating ethical laws of the United Nations, intervened in the Syrian war to flatten Arab communities with barrel bombs supporting a dictator, introduced private mercenaries to shackle the peace in Africa, despite the excessive show of terrorism and disregarded for international law, the world seemed to have become incredibly tolerant, surprisingly ‘unmindful’.

And so, the idea of a USSR revival noticeably cropped from obscurity beginning with ‘special interventions’ like in Georgia and many other former USSR satellites.

Well, Ukraine was a mistake.

As Moscow’s latest offensive in Ukraine slowly but bloodily cranks up, the next phase of this ghastly war has well and truly arrived. Contrary to expectations, the Ukrainians are bravely, and successfully, resisting the tens of thousands of fresh Russian recruits being thrown at them. Nevertheless...

It’s a bit of wonder overtly rich people with money are hard to track, how huge they really are should be nice to talk about, maybe unravel some features like ‘juicy’ ones one to drool over such that make you want to join twitter’s Elon Musk, of course using Microsoft software, well, any way you feel like doing.

Honest to God, I never imagine a rich guy floating in midair or actually experiencing out-of-earth sensations, like space venturing you learn ‘from experience’. I thought the plane I fly are from designs of aero engineers not from a kite maker, you know what I mean?
