Good Friday Reflection for Woodworkers | The Cross and Our Craft

As woodworkers, we hold a deep appreciation for the beauty, strength, and purpose found in every piece of wood we shape. Today, on Good Friday, we are reminded of the most significant piece of wood in history—the wooden cross on which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified.

That simple, rugged structure was not a symbol of craftsmanship or art, but of sacrifice. It bore the weight not only of Christ’s body, but of all our sins. As we commemorate this day, may we pause and reflect on what the cross truly means.

For us who work with our hands, it’s humbling to remember that the Savior chose to suffer and die on something built from the same material we use daily. He turned a tool of ex*****on into a symbol of grace, hope, and salvation.

Let this day be more than just a moment of solemn remembrance. Let it deepen our gratitude, shape our character, and guide our hands to build lives—not just projects—rooted in love, humility, and purpose.

May the meaning of the Cross remind us why we create: not just for function or beauty, but for service and significance.

Blessed Good Friday, mga kapwa ko woodworkers.

Woodworking Safety 101: Common Mistakes That Can Cause Injuries (Series 7 of 7)

7. Failing to Secure Workpieces Properly

Mistake: Cutting or drilling wood without securing it can cause it to shift unexpectedly, leading to accidents.

How to Avoid:

● Use clamps or a workbench vise to keep wood stable.

● For drilling, use a scrap board underneath to prevent tear-out and sudden movement.

● When using a router or circular saw, ensure the workpiece is properly supported.

Woodworking Safety 101: Common Mistakes That Can Cause Injuries (Series 6 of 7)

6. Using the Wrong Tool for the Job

Mistake: Using a tool that’s not meant for a specific task (e.g., using a circular saw instead of a jigsaw for curved cuts) can lead to poor results and potential injury.

How to Avoid:

● Choose the right tool for the type of cut or joint you’re making.

● Read the manual to understand the tool’s intended purpose.

● Never modify a tool or remove safety guards to make it fit a task.

5. Improper Handling of Kickback

Mistake: Not anticipating kickback when using a tablesaw or router can result in severe injuries from flying wood or loss of control.

How to Avoid:

● Always stand to the side of the blade’s cutting path, not directly behind the workpiece.

● Use a riving knife or splitter to reduce the chances of kickback.

● Maintain firm control over the wood, keeping both hands in safe positions.

4. Rushing or Working While Fatigued

Mistake: Working while tired or in a hurry increases the chance of losing focus, leading to mistakes and injuries.

How to Avoid:

● Take breaks when working on long projects.

● Never use power tools when feeling tired, distracted, or under the influence of alcohol/medication.

● Always plan your cuts and movements before starting the machine.

3. Not Using Push Sticks or Push Blocks

Mistake: Feeding small workpieces into a tablesaw or jointer with bare hands can lead to severe cuts and loss of fingers.

How to Avoid:

● Always use a push stick or push block to keep your hands at a safe distance.

● For small cuts, use a featherboard to keep wood stable while feeding it through the blade.

2. Ignoring Proper Tool Maintenance

Mistake: Using dull blades, loose components, or misaligned fences increases the risk of kickback and accidents.

How to Avoid:

● Regularly sharpen and replace blades to maintain clean cuts and prevent excessive force.

● Check for loose bolts and adjustments before using any power tool.

● Keep tools clean and free of sawdust buildup to prevent overheating or malfunction.

Woodworking Safety 101: Common Mistakes That Can Cause Injuries (Series 1 of 7)

1. Not Wearing Proper Safety Gear

Mistake: Many woodworkers skip essential protective equipment like safety glasses, hearing protection, or gloves, leading to injuries from flying debris, loud noise, or accidental cuts.

How to Avoid:

● Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from sawdust and debris.

● Use ear protection (earmuffs or plugs) when working with loud machines.

● Wear a dust mask to avoid inhaling sawdust, especially when sanding.
