Grade 8 Homerooms Turn Br. Paul Hall into Global Kitchen
On Monday, April 21, the Grade 8 homerooms turned Br. Paul Meuten Hall into an international culinary stage for the much-anticipated Taste of the World competition.
Each section represented a different country through a three-course meal, showcasing not just culinary skills but also creativity, teamwork, and cultural appreciation.
8-St. Francis of Assisi (SFA), representing Mexico, swept the competition, taking home first place in Best Food, Best Booth Design, Best Presenters, and Overall Champion. Student chefs Vito Yapit, Jasen Esperame, Jomari Luna, Ryu Irikata, Dean Santos, Kraig Cantos, and Vicente Carlos impressed with a menu of burritos, chocolate hot pies, and micheladas. Their presentation of Mexican culture was elevated by presenters Akia Besin and Jhones Dacayanan, who delivered an enthusiastic and informative explanation behind each dish.
8-St. Ignatius, who brought the flavors of Japan to the event, then took second place. Their team, Skye Alegre, Bryce Santos, Mykel Villaroya, Dion Marzan, Joaquin Ornedo, AJ Dominguez, and Ynigo Robles prepared Takikomi Gohan and Mochi. Presenters Aaliyah Raval and Gio Muyco brought life to their booth with engaging stories, adding cultural context that highlighted the Japanese cuisine.
8-St. Augustine took third place, representing Italy with a four-course meal of Aglio e Olio, Blood Orange Soda, Insalata Caprese, and Macedonia de Frutta. Student chefs Martino Purificacion, Chris Umali, Migz Javier, Drake Mayores, River Jabonero, Zyrael Santos, and Dwayne Hernandez were recognized for their flavors and ex*****on. Presenters Johan Marra and Lucas Bolivar enhanced their booth with thoughtful commentary on Italy’s rich culinary heritage.
8-St. Anthony, representing Argentina, also impressed with a hearty menu of Beef Stew, Dulce de Leche, and Wine. Student chefs Uno Sicat, Mark Tan, Raleigh Parane, Nicolas Hubalde, Delfin Bautista, Rossbert Buna, and AJ Latupan showcased teamwork and enthusiasm. Presenters Daniel Fernandez and Ethan Denton guided the audience through each course, highlighting the deep culture behind the dishes.
8-St. Jerome, rounding out the showcase, represented Mali with a menu of Meni Meniyong, Ginger Juice, and La Capitaine Sangha. Chefs Amyrah Parreno, Mary Pallejera, Athena Duallo, Bernice Bardaje, Eisesen Cruz, Mallari Euala, and Caitlyn Aquino brought West African flavors to life as presenters Althea Olino and Abiel Paras delivered an informative and heartfelt explanation of Mali’s culinary traditions.
Judges Mrs Agnes Gadingan, Mrs. Desiree Catalan, Ms. Susan Afable, Mrs. Teresa Ibarra, and Ms. Via Dolorosa commended all sections for their effort, creativity, and authentic representation of world cultures. More than a competition, this was a celebration of diversity, teamwork, and the talents of the Marist Grade 8 students.
