âPreparing the Next Generation Beyond Academicsâ
I came across this news about Senator Robin Padilla filing the âAnti-Pabebe Billâ (Senate Bill No. 1300).
The title sounds funny, but the idea makes sense. Itâs about teaching life skills in school, not just academics. Think gardening, sewing, cooking, household repairs, and financial literacy.
And honestly, I get the point. Many of us graduated without really understanding algebra. I memorized formulas, passed exams, but in real life? I never used them. But at least I can cook rice and boil an egg. đ
Beyond that? Planting veggies or fixing chairs? Uhh⊠not really my thing. And letâs be real, agriculture in the Philippines isnât as simple as âplant and wait,â especially with typhoons destroying crops. Agriculture is science. Itâs about the timing, soil quality, weather, proper techniques, which makes it more complex than it sounds.
Some might argue, âIsnât this the parentsâ job?â Ideally yes, but not all parents have the time, money, or knowledge. Others will say, âWhy bother? Iâll just pay someone else.â But what if youâre alone and need to handle things yourself? These lessons arenât about turning kids into carpenters or farmers. Theyâre about self-reliance and respect for work.
Of course, it wonât be easy specially for teachers that are already overworked, and many schools lack resources. For this bill to work, it needs proper funding and support.
Still, I think the heart of it is right. To raise a generation thatâs not just book-smart, but life-smart. Because real life doesnât test us with algebra equations. It tests us with survival, independence, and resilience.
What do you think? Should schools really include life skills like cooking, planting, and budgeting in the curriculum?
