Born and raised in General Santos City, Elizsa Chomi initially aspired to become a surgeon. However, her life took a different path when she earned a scholarship to the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific. She accepted the opportunity with courage, unaware of the challenges and transformations that would await her at the academy. With determination and resilience, Elizsa pursued a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, eventually becoming a proud member of the Althazean Class of 2011.

With strong support from her parents, Dr. Lamberto and Nurse Irene, Midshipwoman Elizsa Chomi strove for excellence during her time at the academy.

โ€‹โ€œDespite being the only girl, I have consistently outperformed my siblingsโ€”something my parents have always acknowledged. I consistently excel in any environment Iโ€™m placed in. My parentsโ€™ unwavering belief in me has been a source of strength, helping me grow into who I am today,โ€ Chief Engineer (C/E) Chomi expressed.

With the help of her brother, Elijohnโ€”who was a year ahead of her in the academy and is now also a chief engineerโ€”Elizsa Chomi felt assured, knowing he would always be there when things become difficult.
โ€‹
โ€œEven though weโ€™re not the kind of siblings who openly talk or show emotions, Iโ€™ve always known heโ€™s there for me when it counts. Sharing the same field of work gives me a quiet sense of assurance, knowing we understand each otherโ€™s path even without saying much,โ€ she added.

Elizsa Chomiโ€™s journey toward becoming a Chief Engineer began in 2009, when she joined the maritime industry as an engine cadet during the two-month dry-docking of the MT Ballad at Chengxi Shipyard in China. This experience introduced her to the complex demands of ship engineering and laid the foundation for a career marked by perseverance, technical excellence, and progressive leadership.

In 2012, she officially began sailing as a Junior Third Assistant Engineer (3AE/4E). After demonstrating exceptional competence, she was promoted after just two months to Third Assistant Engineer. Over the next four years, she completed five contracts in this role, steadily building her technical knowledge and operational expertise.

In 2016, Chomi advanced to Second Assistant Engineer (2AE/3E), serving through six contracts. During this phase, she further developed her proficiency in engine operations and assumed greater supervisory responsibilities. Her consistent performance led to a promotion in 2021 to First Assistant Engineer (1AE), commonly known as Second Engineer (2E), in which she assumed an operational lead role in the engine department.

From 2021 to 2024, Chomi served as Second Engineer on six additional contracts. Her leadership, technical acumen, and professionalism culminated in a historic promotion in 2024 to Chief Engineer.

She became the first female Chief Engineer at Unitankersโ€”an achievement that marked a significant milestone not only in her personal journey but also in the companyโ€™s history. Her first command as Chief Engineer occurred during the dry-docking of the MT Samus Swan at Besiktas Shipyardโ€”a symbolic, full-circle moment that reflected her rise from cadet to department head.

As of 2025, Elizsa Chomi is serving her fourth contract as Chief Engineer. Most recently, she and the Chief Officer were deployed on 12 April 2025 as supernumerary crew aboard a seven-year-old vessel managed by an entirely Turkish crew. This transitional period allowed them to study and familiarize themselves with the vesselโ€™s systems and operations before its formal turnover to Unitankers. The official handover took place on 7 May 2025, marking another significant step in her expanding leadership role.

Now highly accomplished at age 35, C/E Chomi has overcome experiences and hardships at sea that were far from insignificant. As the only woman aboard the vessel, harassment has remained the most persistent and formidable challenge she has faced. Despite these obstacles, she refuses to let fear or intimidation shape her actions. Instead, she consistently turns to trusted mentors and allies onboard and utilizes formal reporting mechanismsโ€”even when the process is emotionally difficult.

โ€‹โ€œBeing a woman at sea comes with many challenges, but harassment has undoubtedly been the most persistent and difficult one,โ€ said C/E Chomi. โ€œI learned to stand my ground and speak up when necessary. I sought guidance from trusted mentors and allies on board and made use of available reporting channels, even when it felt uncomfortable. Most importantly, I refused to let fear or intimidation define my career. Instead, I focused on excelling in my duties and building a reputation based on competence and character. With time, I became not just more resilient but also an advocate for safer, more respectful working environments for women at sea.โ€

Additionally, being underestimated due to gender remains an inevitable challenge, as women are often perceived as the weaker gender. However, this perception should not be a deterrent. Instead, it can serve as motivation and a challenge to push oneself to the limits and grow as an individual.
โ€‹
โ€œWomen are always characterized as the weaker gender, and that is the sad reality of life,โ€ said C/E Chomi. โ€œAside from working in a male-dominated industry, I also belong to a male-dominated departmentโ€”the engine department. On top of that, I work on oil chemical tanker vessels. People will always assume that you cannot perform as well as your male counterparts. But I donโ€™t see that as a disadvantage. The advantage of being underestimated lies in the freedom it affords. When people expect little from you, it gives you space to experiment, take risks, and grow without pressure or interference. Being underestimated can ignite a quiet determination. It can drive you to prove others wrong and exceed your own limits. Enduring underestimation often builds humility, patience, resilience, and inner strengthโ€”qualities that serve well in both personal and professional life. It can be a hidden gift, especially for those who know their worth and choose to reveal it at the right moment.โ€

With regard to emotional struggles and loneliness at sea, C/E Chomi emphasizes the importance of acknowledging such emotions while maintaining professional boundaries.

โ€‹โ€œI allowed myself to feel but didnโ€™t let emotions control my decisions,โ€ she explained. โ€œInstead, I used them to stay empathetic and build strong relationships with my crew while still maintaining strong boundaries, particularly around my personal life, to ensure professionalism and respect in the workplace.โ€

๐Š๐ž๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ ๐’๐ฎ๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ
To succeed in the maritime industry, C/E Chomi stresses the importance of emotional resilience. Given the isolation and physical demands of seafaring life, mental toughness is essential.

โ€‹โ€œTo succeed in the maritime industry, a woman needs a blend of technical expertise, mental resilience, and leadership qualities. The most important quality for me is emotional strength. Life at sea can be isolating and physically demanding, so mental toughness is crucial,โ€ she noted.

When asked why women should strive for leadership positions, she emphasized the need to challenge stereotypes and claim rightful spaces in the profession.

โ€‹โ€œWhatโ€™s in your head matters far more than whatโ€™s between your legs. Iโ€™m often annoyed by men who think theyโ€™re superior simply because they are men, and I respond by showing them exactly what women can achieve. I was motivated by a desire to break stereotypes and prove that women belong in leadership roles at sea, as well as by the opportunity to gain financial independence and stability.โ€
Her message to young women aspiring to become successful seafarers is one of perseverance and self-belief.
โ€‹
โ€œBelieve in your abilities and never let anyone tell you that you donโ€™t belong. This path wonโ€™t always be easy, but your passion, determination, and resilience will carry you through. You can achieve anything you set your mind to.โ€

Although women comprise only 1.2% of the global seafaring workforce, progress is visible: the proportion of women officers onboard rose to 0.85% in 2020 from 0.7% in 2015, according to the International Transport Workersโ€™ Federation (ITF). While these figures may seem modest, they represent meaningful change in an industry historically dominated by men.

This progress is exemplified by women like C/E Elizsa Chomi, who have broken through gender barriers and challenged longstanding perceptions of women as the โ€œweaker gender.โ€ Through their leadership and resilience, they are expanding the horizon for future generations of women in maritime professions.

Women like her continue to inspire others. As young women today, we should aspire to follow in their footsteps. Now that more opportunities are available and barriers have been dismantled, it is our responsibility to build on this progress and demonstrate that women truly belong at sea.

In observance of The National "STOP THE BLEED" Day and the "Dugo Ko, Buhay Mo" advocacy, the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific hosted the 89th Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) Foundation Celebration last 11 September 2025 at the IMMAJ Multipurpose Hall, West Campus.

The event gathered surgeons, health professionals, cadets and faculty to highlight the importance of lifesaving interventions, focusing on empowering the MAAP community with practical skills such as bleeding control and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ensuring readiness to respond during life-threatening emergencies even in areas far from hospitals.

In his opening remarks, President VADM Eduardo Ma. R. Santos AFP (Ret) emphasized the academyโ€™s distance from hospitals, underscoring the vital role of MAAPโ€™s infirmary and trained medical staff.

โ€œWe are far from immediate medical facilities, so preparedness is not optionalโ€”it is essential,โ€ he said.

Dr. Ramil R. Pizarro, President of the PCSโ€“Central Luzon Chapter, also addressed the participants, highlighting the essence of the celebration and its mission to bring the โ€œStop the Bleedโ€ advocacy closer to communities.

โ€œThis is not just a medical initiative; it is a call for ordinary citizens to become first responders when seconds matter most,โ€ he added.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Dra. Maria Betina Gatmaitan, Head of the Emergency Medicine Department, shared how the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in the United States revealed uncontrolled bleeding as the leading cause of preventable trauma deaths that led to the creation of the Stop the Bleed campaign by the American College of Surgeons and government agencies.

โ€œSome CPR or self-survival skills are meant to be taught to laypersonsโ€”you donโ€™t need to be a doctor or a nurse to save a life,โ€ Dra. Gatmaitan emphasized.
Furthermore, to ensure that the lessons went beyond theory, participants engaged in hands-on training sessions.

Cadets and security staff practiced hands-only CPR on adult and infant mannequins, while instructors guided them through proper chest compression techniques.

They also took part in Stop the Bleed workshops, learning wound packing, direct pressure application, and the correct use of tourniquets skills proven to bridge the critical gap between an accident and professional medical response.

Department of Health Sectetary Teodoro J. Herbosa commended the advocacy for strengthening public health readiness.

โ€œActivities like Stop the Bleed and CPR training build a culture of preparedness. When more citizens are empowered, more lives can be saved, even before professional responders arrive,โ€ he remarked.

The event also featured interactive activities such as intravenous insertion on a pigโ€™s limb to simulate vascular access under pressure, performing CPR compressions on both anatomical models and biological specimens to ensure proper technique, and joined other hands-on-drillsโ€”all aimed at building realism, enhancing skills, and preparing them for real-life emergencies.

30/08/2025

As we celebrate National Press Freedom Day, we honor the press as a pillar of truth, a guardian of democracy, and a voice for the people. This celebration is not only a tribute to the courage of journalists but also serves as a plea to preserve the freedom that keeps society informed and empowered. Press freedom is more than a right, it is the lifeblood of a nation that values justice and progress.

As part of the observance of the International Youth Day, 14 midshipmen and women from the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific participated in the AMOSUP Youth seminar held last August 12, 2025 at the Intramuros AMOSUP Senโ€™ In No Ie Building, Manila.

Highlighting

The Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) joined the world in celebrating International Youth Day on August 12, highlighting this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œWe are the Future of Work.โ€ As part of the observance, MAAP cadets actively participated in the AMOSUP Youth Seminars held at the MAAP CGSO Campus Multipurpose Hall and at the Intramuros AMOSUP Senโ€™ In No Ie Building, where young seafarers engaged in discussions on maritime labor, sustainability, and the changing demands of the global workforce.

Beyond dialogue, the events also featured peer-to-peer interactions and a talent showcase, where cadets demonstrated creativity and camaraderie while strengthening their sense of community with fellow maritime youth.
These activities emphasized not only professional preparedness but also the importance of teamwork, cultural exchange, and holistic development.

โ€œBeing a cadet in MAAP means more than preparing for sea service. It is about developing the skills, values, and mindset to take part in the future of work,โ€ Midwn 1Cl Garrido affirmed.

By blending technical training with leadership development and youth engagement programs, MAAP continues to produce maritime professionals who are globally competitive, socially responsible, and future-ready. The cadetsโ€™ participation in the AMOSUP Youth Seminars underscored their readiness to embrace their role as the next generation of maritime leaders.

In a significant step of holistically developing future maritime leaders, the Midshipmen Fleet of the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific conducted the Club Fair 2025 at the MAAP gymnasium on August 19, 2025, as they offered extracurricular opportunities for the Class of 2029.

With the theme โ€œRobloxโ€, a total of 35 distinct clubs, each with their own areas of specialization, actively participated during the event by flaunting their audio-visual presentations and booths to encourage the 4CL Midshipmen into joining a club that aligns with their interests.

In her opening message, Midshipwoman 1CL Kiara Casaberde, the Fleet Plans and Programs Officer, underscored the objectives of the event.

โ€œThe Club Fair is where we get to showcase our passion, talents, and skills aside from the academic and regimental training of this academy,โ€ she said in her speech.

Furthermore, Before diving into the club signatories, VAdm. Eduardo Ma R. Santos, AFP (Ret), urged all fourthclassmen to be a member of at least one club and add more if they are doing well in conduct and in academics.

โ€œThink what is good for you, join what will develop you, select the club that will make your heart race, and do your best at all timesโ€ were his words of reminder for them, as they set out to choose their preferred clubs and organizations.

The Club Fair is a milestone for the Class of 2029, as it is annually held to gather the plebes and enable them to reveal what they are capable of.

The respective clubs, under the supervision of their Midshipmen In-Charge (MIC), shall coordinate with their members to facilitate activities in preparation for the forthcoming academy events.
