PHILIPPINE DUCK, GOLDEN-CROWNED FLYING FOX AMONG SPECIES RECORDED IN BONGNP-TBPPS BIODIVERSITY MONITORING

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol under the leadership of Regional Executive Director (RED) Francisco E. Milla Jr., CESO III, through the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) of Bongsanglay Natural Park (BongNP) and Ticao Burias Pass Protected Seascape (TBPPS), headed by Park Operations Superintendent (POSu) V Rey O. Samaniego, successfully conducted the 2nd Semester Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS) at Barangay Halabangbaybay, San Pascual, Masbate recently.

The activity aimed to document the status of flora and fauna, assess the condition of the mangrove ecosystem, and generate scientific data that will serve as a basis for informed conservation and management interventions within the protected area.

A highlight of the monitoring activity was the observation and photographic documentation of several wildlife species utilizing the mangrove and adjacent coastal habitats. Of particular significance was the Philippine Duck (Anas luzonica), an endemic species classified as Vulnerable under DENR Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2019-09, and the Giant Golden-crowned Flying Fox (Acerodon jubatus), a Philippine endemic classified as Critically Endangered under the same issuance.

Other notable species recorded included the Eurasian Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) and Grey-tailed Tattler (Tringa brevipes), both migratory shorebirds; as well as the Striated Heron (Butorides striata), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris), Pacific Swallow (Hirundo javanica), Garden Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis), Philippine Bulbul (Hypsipetes philippinus), Coleto (Sarcops calvus), Large-billed Crow (Corvus macrorhynchos), and Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus).

The occurrence of these resident, endemic, threatened, and migratory species highlights the ecological importance of the area as a vital habitat that provides feeding, roosting, breeding, and stopover sites. These observations further underscore the significant role of mangrove ecosystems in supporting biodiversity conservation within the protected area.

Through its continuing efforts to assess the ecological condition of protected areas through regular biodiversity and habitat monitoring, DENR Bicol remains committed to conserving the country's rich biological diversity through sustained biodiversity assessments, habitat protection initiatives, and collaborative efforts with partner agencies, local government units, and coastal communities in safeguarding the invaluable natural resources of the Ticao Burias Pass Protected Seascape. # # #
