GOSPEL OF THE DAY

"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.

Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus,
and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him.
An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.
Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything.
Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel,
the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered.
Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
Mark 3:7-12
Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed; also from Judea

and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from about Tyre and Sidon a great multitude, hearing all that he did, came to him.

And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they should crush him;

for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him.

And whenever the unclean spirits beheld him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God."

And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

St. Fabian was an unexpected choice for Pope in 236. A layperson and not particularly well-known, he was in Rome following Pope Anteros's death. During the election, a dove landed on Fabian's head, reminiscent of the Holy Spirit descending on Christ. This sign convinced the gathered that Fabian was divinely chosen to lead, and he was proclaimed Pope.

Under Emperor Philip, Fabian's papacy began with an unusual period of peace for the Church, allowing him to strengthen its structure. He appointed seven deacons and collected the acts of the martyrs. However, this tranquility was short-lived.

With Philip's death, persecution resumed under Emperor Decius, who demanded Christians renounce their faith. Many faltered, but Fabian, marked by the dove's symbol of peace, remained steadfast. His courage inspired the faithful until he was martyred in 250.

Pope St. Fabian's tomb can still be visited in the Cemetery of Calixtus.

We honor his legacy by praying for persecuted Christians and asking for the strength to maintain our faith in times of both peace and adversity. St. Fabian reminds us that true peace comes from Christ and urges us never to deny our beliefs to avoid conflict. Amen.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
MARK 2:13-17
He went out again beside the sea; and all the crowd gathered about him, and he taught them.

And as he passed on, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.

And as he sat at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were sitting with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many who followed him.

And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

THE GOSPEL OF THE DAY
MARK 2:1-12

ENGLISH
And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.

And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them.

And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.

And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay.

And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven."

Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,

"Why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts?

Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, `Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, `Rise, take up your pallet and walk'?

But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" -- he said to the paralytic --

"I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home."

And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

THE GOSPEL OF THE DAY
LUKE 4:14-22
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and a report concerning him went out through all the surrounding country.

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. And he stood up to read;

and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written,

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."

And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, "Is not this Joseph's son?"

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
LUKE 4:18
As he went ashore he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the hour is now late;

send them away, to go into the country and villages round about and buy themselves something to eat."

But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." And they said to him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?"

And he said to them, "How many loaves have you? Go and see." And when they had found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."

Then he commanded them all to sit down by companies upon the green grass.

So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.

And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all.

And they all ate and were satisfied.

And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.

And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.
