Matalam, Cotabato – In a bid to educate the youth on crucial life matters, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Matalam conducted a timely seminar on Responsible Parenthood, Reproductive Health, and Teenage Pregnancy at Matalam High School on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

The event was exclusively attended by Grade 12 students, aligning with the Department of Education’s efforts to integrate real-life, values-based, and health-conscious education in schools. Representatives from the LGU and the Municipal Health Office of Matalam facilitated the discussion, aiming to empower students with the knowledge and maturity needed in navigating adulthood and relationships.

The seminar was divided into two key lessons: the first focused on Reproductive Health and Sexual Relationships, which tackled the risks of early sexual activity and the importance of informed decisions; the second explored Responsible Parenthood, emphasizing the responsibilities and challenges that come with raising a family at a young age.

During the seminar, speakers also highlighted legal aspects related to teenage pregnancy, available government programs, and access to local health services.

An open forum segment allowed students to raise questions freely, encouraging honest dialogue about topics that are often left unspoken in traditional classroom settings.

Matalam High School expressed its gratitude to LGU Matalam for its continued commitment to youth education and development. The school’s administration emphasized that this initiative is part of their broader mission to create a safe and informed environment for all learners.

As teenage pregnancy continues to be a growing concern in the Philippines, events like this mark a proactive step toward prevention and youth empowerment at the community level.

Desiree Miranda, a Grade 10 SPA Theater student, has made her mark in the literary world with her piece Sa Likod ng Maskara, published in Takós - An Anthology of Gendered Refereed Literary Genres Volume V by the Institute of Linguistics and Literature at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.

Miranda hopes readers will understand that they do not have to be ashamed of who they are. She believes in expressing one’s true self without fear or hesitation, regardless of what others say.

Ms. Claribel Amor Juromay, theater class instructor and a mentor for aspiring writers, also shared advice for those hoping to have their works published. “They really have to write and take criticisms seriously. They have to try even if they fail, and they have to venture into the world rather than stay inside the classroom,” Ms. Juromay said, encouraging young writers to step beyond their comfort zones and seek opportunities for their work.

Miranda's recognition is a testament to the power of storytelling, inspiring young writers to embrace their truths and share their narratives with the world.

As Matalam High School marks its 41st Founding Anniversary, Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) President Cristah Angelic Panigas, a Grade 12 STEM student, shared her thoughts on the significance of the event. According to her, the celebration serves as a time to honor the rich history and achievements of the school and its students, who continue to excel in various fields.

The student leader also hopes that if there would be a chance for future celebrations, they would be more extravagant, "dahil ito ang time na gina-commemorate ang school."

"You cannot give what you don't have.
