You are the star of this training workshop โ€” Gamboa to young aspiring journalists

Secondary School Principal III Elene Marie Jane A. Gamboa inspired participants during the opening of the School-Initiated Journalism Training and Workshop on August 26, with the message, โ€œYou are the star of this training workshop.โ€

In her address, Principal Gamboa challenged the student journalists to excel in future contests. โ€œI challenge you to bring home awards. We will bring home the pride of the whole Matanao; not only in Matanao 1, not only in MNHS, but the whole municipality of Matanao,โ€ she said, urging the participants to aim higher in division, regional, and national competitions.

โ€œIsa sa inyo rito or marami sa inyo rito ang magiging writers in the future,โ€ Gamboa added, motivating them to see themselves as the โ€œvoice of the futureโ€ in journalism.

Anchored on the theme โ€œVoices of the Future: Empowering Youth Through Responsible Journalism,โ€ the event gathered aspiring campus journalists from Matanao 1 and Matanao 2, representing elementary, junior, and senior high schools.

The three-day training is still ongoing, with upcoming sessions set to cover Feature writing, Editorial writing, Photojournalism, Sci-Tech writing and other key areas aimed to strengthen the participantsโ€™ skills in campus journalism.

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara set foot in Matanao National High School โ€“ Junior and Senior high school for the first time on July 10, to see the damage caused by the 2019 Magnitude 6.9 earthquake, which destroyed classrooms, forcing students into temporary shelters where SHS learners still endure extreme heat.

DepEd Region XI Regional Director Allan G. Farnazo, Assistant Regional Director Rebonfamil R. Baguio, Davao del Sur SDS Lorenzo E. Mendoza (CESO V), ASDS Marilyn V. Deduyo (CESO VI), Vice Governor Marc Douglas Chan Cagas IV, Mayor Irick Agbon, Vice Mayor Hector Xiao, Matanao I PSDS Dr. Elizabeth A. Bernaldez, division stakeholders, and school heads, joined the visit and welcomed the Secretary warmly.

After witnessing the school's condition, Secretary Angara vowed to address the school's concern faced by both junior and senior high school students.

"I am very sympathetic to your situation and I want to address the problems here sa Senior High School at sa Junior High School. So, definitely, magkakaroon tayo ng combination of interventionโ€”whether itโ€™s a construction of new classrooms or repair and rehab of existing ones." He said.

Moreover, he emphasized the need to prioritize a new school building, offer short-term relief, and assured the community that future classrooms will be designed with better airflow to prevent health issues caused by overheating.

"Dapat i-prioritize ang construction of a school building dito, and definitely, pagbigay ng more electric fans siguro for the meantime. Kasi hindi basta-basta ma-construct yung classroom... maybe, one to two years. Weโ€™ll make sure our new classrooms will be breathable. And hindi na mangyayari yung nasa clinic lagi ang ating mga children.โ€ Secretary Angara asserted, following the consecutive cases of learners that fainted due to extreme heat.

In line with this, he also handed over laptops and tablets to Matanao NHS to support digital learning and strengthen DepEdโ€™s commitment to quality education through technology.

Secretary Angaraโ€™s presence highlighted the schoolโ€™s urgent needs and confirmed DepEdโ€™s commitment to provide both immediate solutions, improving the learning conditions and rebuilding the damaged facilities at MNHS.

โ€˜80% of the work is accomplishedโ€™ โ€“ Aguilar, HT IV

Matanao National High Schoolโ€™s โ€œLusong! Balik Sigla, Balik Eskwelaโ€ Program has finally concluded, as Grade ten teachers, parents, students, and other volunteers led the activity on October 25.

Sir Florderico C. Aguilar, Head Teacher IV, voiced his thoughts about the brigada eskwela, โ€œActually, mao gyud ni plano sa atong principal na naay brigada eskwela. Ang gibuhat sa atong principal, dunay mga schedule na ginahimo. Katong Lunes nagsugod ang Grade 7, ika-duha ang Grade 8, ika-tulo ang Grade 9, ug katapusan karon ang Grade 10.โ€ ("Actually, this is really the plan of our principal to have a Brigada Eskwela. Our principal has arranged some schedules for this. Last Monday, Grade 7 started, followed by Grade 8 on the second day, Grade 9 on the third day, and finally today is [the schedule of] Grade 10.")

โ€ ("I am very happy that the students will finally get to experience a nice, conducive room for them. We can see that almost 80% of the work is accomplished by the parents. I am sure that this November, we will have a big homecoming at our old building, in our old campus.") Sir Aguilar added.

Moreover, Maโ€™am Mary Ann D. Awe, School Head of Manga High School Annex, along with her churchmates at Christ the Healer International Missions Movement (CTHIMM) Matanao, went to the last day of Brigada Eskwela. Together, they worked on restoring classrooms and surroundings to help the school get back on track.

In addition, a parent and a teacher, Sir Roxan Dominique C. Sabornido, Master Teacher I, stated, โ€œAs a parent, I'm very happy that weโ€™re going back to the old school because in the TLS, it is very uncomfortable for my kid. I felt excited because after 5 years, we are going back to the old school. And as a teacher, it has been a long, struggling, and very warm years staying in the TLS.โ€

Volunteers from Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Matanao, led by Hon. Justin F. Siao, also showed their support and helped clean a particular classroom.

Truly, the significant time and effort contributed by the volunteers have eventually come to fruition.

On the other hand, Regine Bangcas, a Grade 10 STE student expressed her happiness. โ€ ("Today, you can really feel that your heart is really full, it is filled with happiness, because we can come back here. As a Grade 10 student, we are only temporarily staying in this room or school, but the joy of seeing the school clean cannot be replaced. That's why my happiness in returning here is truly priceless.")

Everyone showed cooperation and dedication to help the school, which will surely pay off as the reopening comes close.

Rising from our ruins

๐Œatanao National High School held its Brigada Eskwela with the theme "Lusong! Balik sigla, balik eskwela!" from October 22 to 25. It aims to transform Matanao National High School into a luminous beacon of hope. Sir Delarey Florentino, Principal IV, led the Brigada for the first day alongside the help of the Grade 7 faculty, parents, students, and other stakeholders.

๐“he school was filled with a parade of people with the very core to replaster the dust and remnants of horrifying earthquakes from five years back, causing the once bustling school to become a crumbling castle.

๐“he project started as early as seven in the morning. While idling time, gray clouds slowly eloped the serene horizon, causing the gentle drizzle - each drop cleansing the scars of neglect and nurturing the once-forgotten green fields of the school. As colors splashed onto the pathways, the vibrant grass unfurled like a welcoming carpet, ready to embrace eager students. This revival breathed new life into the heart of the campus, where the spirit of unity, volunteerism, and determination surged like a current, revitalizing the green expanse and transforming it into a thriving sanctuary of learning.

๐“he wait is finally coming near; the long overdue was seemingly forging its way to fortify the once fragile campus walls. Additionally, the bayanihan project was graced by the volunteers from the Division of Davao del Sur, spearheaded by our Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Lorenzo E. Mendoza, CESO V; and Assistant Division Schools Superintendent (ASDS) Marilyn V. Deduyo, CESO VI. Volunteer personnel from the locality's Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) and criminology student interns from the Matanao Philippine National Police (PNP) took time and effort to witness and participate in the bayanihan's magic and culture. Along with these people, the totality of the Grade 7 level from all sections came together to assist in rebuilding the ruins of the schoolโ€™s past.

๐€s the wild air filled the earthy scent of fresh soil in the breeze, it wrapped the volunteers in a fragrant embrace of achievement. Tired yet triumphant, their faces radiated pride, for they were not merely restoring a school โ€” they were igniting a brighter future, crafting a narrative of renewal from the ruins, and turning despair into a vibrant tapestry of hope that will inspire generations to come, that indeed, rising from the crumbs of before is not impossible if only we work together, hand in hand.
