As the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mati is set to mark its 40th anniversary celebration on February 16, 2024, it is important to know and understand the symbols and elements used in the chosen official logo.
Presented below are the elements and their meaning.
A. 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬
Embedded at the center of the number 4 is the cross that signifies the Catholic Faith planted in our shores by the early missionaries 500 years ago. It also affirms the centrality of Jesus Christ in the mission of the Diocese of Mati and whose salvific act the latter shares.
B. 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲
Just like Mary at the foot of the cross and being with Jesus through thick and thin, the Diocese of Mati reaches four decades because of the Blessed Virgin’s intercessions.
C. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝
It symbolizes the copious blessing that the Diocese of Mati receives through the years and in return, it also shares with the people she is entrusted with.
D. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝
They signify the flock that the Diocese of Mati is tasked to shepherd and journey with. At the forefront of this journey is the Mandaya Tribe of Davao Oriental represented by the Dagmay cloth fastened by one of the members of the flock.

In JAPAN, there is NO TEACHER'S DAY...

Once I asked my Japanese colleague, Teacher Yamamoto:

- When do you celebrate Teachers' Day in Japan, and how do you observe it?

Surprised by my question, he replied:

- We don't have any Teachers' Day celebration. Hearing his response, I didn't know whether to believe him or not. I wondered, 'Why does a country with a developed economy, science, and technology show such a lack of respect for teachers and their work?'

One day after work, Yamamoto invited me to his home. Since he lived far from the school, we took the subway. The subway cars were crowded during the evening rush hour. I managed to squeeze in and stood, holding onto the handrails tightly. Suddenly, an elderly man sitting next to me offered his seat. Not understanding such respectful behavior from the older man, I couldn't accept his offer, but he insisted, and I had to sit.

After leaving the subway, I asked Yamamoto to explain the elder's action. Yamamoto smiled and pointed to my teacher's badge, saying:

- This old man saw your teacher's badge and offered his seat as a sign of respect for your status.

Since it was my first time visiting Teacher Yamamoto, I felt uncomfortable going empty-handed, so I decided to buy a gift. I shared my thoughts with Yamamoto, and he supported me, saying that there's a store for teachers ahead where you can buy items at discounted prices.

Once again, I couldn't contain my emotions:

- Are these discounts only for teachers? - I asked.
Confirming my words, Yamamoto said:

- In Japan, a teacher is the most respected profession, the most respected person. Japanese entrepreneurs are delighted when teachers visit their stores; they consider it an honor.

During my time in Japan, I repeatedly saw how Japanese people deeply respect teachers. There are separate seats for them on the subway, dedicated stores, and teachers don't wait in line for tickets on any form of transportation.

Why do Japanese teachers need a separate holiday when every day of their lives is like a celebration?

As I retell this story, I wholeheartedly wish for our society to grow to such a level of reverence for teachers, and for teachers to be worthy of such a high title!"

𝐕𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐉𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑
𝐈𝐤𝐚𝐰 𝐛𝐚 𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐠? 𝐀𝐥𝐢, 𝐩𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐠!

In celebration of Vocation Month, it has been an annual activity of the church to conduct a Vocation Jamboree as an avenue for the youth to discern well in their vocation. This is a pivotal moment in their lives as they begin their journey towards discovering their calling from God.

With various parishes and Catholic schools, this event will be graced by different religious orders of priests and nuns to guide the youth to proper discernment of their vocation in life.

Together, let us embody the vibrant energy and enthusiasm as children of God as we embark on a journey of discovery at the Vocation Jamboree 2023, this coming 29th to 30th day of September, which will be held at St. Therese Gym, Clergy House Compound, City of Mati. There will be no registration fee, and a maximum of 20 participants are needed from each parish to take part in this overnight activity. See you there!
