The Coconut Negosyo Festival 2025 opened on November 27 at Oriental Prince in Dahican, celebrating the coconut as Davao Orientalโ€™s โ€œTree of Lifeโ€ and a vital driver of local livelihood and innovation. Led by DTI Davao Oriental with support from the Provincial Government and the City of Mati, the event gathered coconut farmers, MSMEs, youth creatives, artisans, and partner agencies.

Exhibits and demonstrations highlighted coco-based food technology, weaving, beadwork, fabric arts, and a Coconut Product Innovation Competition. LGUs presented their own coconut displays, while youth sessions and the Rampa Oryental fashion showcase added vibrancy to the celebration.

The festival underscored the provinceโ€™s commitment to strengthening the coconut industry and empowering community-based innovation.

A delegation from the Nagoya University Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences (NU-GSBS) visited the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) in Los Baรฑos, Laguna to discuss potential collaboration in research, development, and scholarship programs.

The group was welcomed by Dr. Lilian G. Bondoc of the Policy Coordination and Monitoring Division, together with Dr. Ronilo O. de Castro, Dr. Fezoil Luz C. Decena of the Institute Development Division, and representatives from the Livestock Research Division.

The NU-GSBS delegation was led by Vice Dean Dr. Satoshi Ohkura, accompanied by faculty members Dr. Sho Nakamura, Dr. Witaya Suriyasathaporn, and Dr. Sotaro Chiba. Dr. Ohkura presented the universityโ€™s academic and research programs, highlighting its strong focus on biological and agricultural sciences and its commitment to international collaboration.

Both institutions agreed to continue discussions and explore the development of a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize cooperation. The potential partnership is expected to support advancements in agricultural science and technology and contribute to sustainable development in the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources sector.

The Provincial Government of Davao Oriental, through the ELCAC Office, facilitated the signing of documents for Peace Advocates applying under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration and Amnesty Program (E-CLIP) and the Localized Peace Engagement (LPE) mechanism.

The initiative supports the reintegration of former conflict-affected individuals into mainstream society while promoting community resilience, peace-building, and development. Once their applications are approved by the Local Amnesty Board, 25 applicants from the province are set to receive their Safe Conduct Passes marking a key step toward their transition to civilian life.

The Amnesty Program, implemented under Proclamation No. 1093, aims to support national efforts to address the decades-long communist insurgency by providing eligible individuals formerly associated with the CPPโ€“NPAโ€“NDF the opportunity to reintegrate and begin anew.

Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) strengthened its role in regional gender initiatives at the 2025 Regional Gender and Development (GAD) Summit held on November 25โ€“26 at USePโ€“Obrero Campus in Davao City.

Organized by RGAN XI, CHED RO XI, and USeP, the summit gathered GAD leaders and educators from across the region under the theme โ€œGender Justice and the Digital Age.โ€ A key highlight was the launch of the RGAN XI Gender Research Policy Journal, led by DOrSUโ€™s Asst. Prof. Jhonnel P. Villegas as Editor in Chief.

The event featured plenary talks on campus justice, safe spaces, AI and gender, and the role of gender research. It also opened the regional observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women.

DOrSU showcased its GAD extension programs through a poster exhibit, reflecting ongoing efforts to support gender sensitivity and safe spaces in communities.

The Philippine Senate has backed the Department of Educationโ€™s (DepEd) proposed โ‚ฑ1.044-trillion budget for 2026, the largest in the countryโ€™s history. This forms part of the Marcos administrationโ€™s โ‚ฑ6.793-trillion national budget, bringing total education funding to โ‚ฑ1.38 trillion.

Senators highlighted that the boost aims to address classroom shortages, student nutrition, teacher gaps, and other long-standing education challenges. DepEd plans to accelerate school construction, expand teacher hiring, improve digital connectivity in underserved schools, and deploy 10,000 school counselor associates for mental health and anti-bullying support.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the funding reflects nationwide support for strengthening basic education and implementing reforms recommended by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II).

Representatives from five major tilapia-producing countries Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore met on October 28โ€“29, 2025 for the Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP) for Southeast Asia Tilapia Association (SEATA) Roundtable. The event, hosted by the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) under the leadership of Technical Director Lukas Manomaitis, aimed to strengthen regional collaboration in tilapia aquaculture.

The roundtable focused on establishing a pre-competitive regional association that will support farmers, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders in exchanging information, advancing technologies, and sharing best practices. Discussions highlighted tilapiaโ€™s growing role in food security, livelihoods, and economic development across Southeast Asia.

Philippine representative Dr. Adelaida T. Calpe of the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“PCAARRD presented ongoing research under the Tilapia Industry Strategic Science and Technology Program. Other Filipino delegates included industry and hatchery leaders.

Participants explored strategies to increase production sustainably, promote innovation, enhance profitability, and assess export opportunities for whole and filleted tilapia. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to improving.

Gatchalian highlighted key initiatives, including the Supplementary Feeding Program (SFP), the First 1,000 Days Grant (F1KD), the Philippine Multisectoral Nutrition Project (PMNP), and the Bangsamoro Umpungan sa Nutrisyon (BangUn). These efforts are designed to provide food assistance while supporting long-term solutions to malnutrition through community-based nutrition services.

He also reaffirmed the DSWDโ€™s commitment to working with local governments, communities, and development partners to ensure proper nutrition from pregnancy through early childhood.

Madayaw TV Entertainment, Davao Oriental State University (DORSU), and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) have formalized a five-year partnership for Project HOPE: A Charity Holiday, an initiative focused on providing support to children under government protective care.

The project, built on the mission Heal. Support. Amplify., will include therapeutic art workshops led by DORSU for children from the Reception and Study Diagnostic Center (RSDC). Their artworks will be enhanced and framed by the KUWADRO UNI-ARTS AND OUTDOORS CLUB, then exhibited and auctioned at the Subangan Museum from December 8โ€“20, 2025. All proceeds from the exhibit will be given directly to the RSDC.

As part of the holiday festivities, the Project HOPE Holiday Cosplay Competitionโ€”organized with the Mati City Events and Promotions Office will be featured during the SamPasko celebration on December 21, 2025. This yearโ€™s event will also introduce a cosplay parade open to both children and adults.

Project HOPE is positioned as a collaborative effort among government, academe, media, and civic groups to foster long-term support for child-focused programs in Davao Oriental.
