𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 | 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬: 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬
Beneath the humble roof of every classroom, where teachers use their voices to shape the values and minds of the next generation, lies a sacrifice woven with time, patience, hardship, and an unwavering heart for teaching. The struggles they face often remain unseen, hidden behind the smiles and dedication they show the moment they step into the classroom.
Can a single day be enough to capture the depth of recognition they deserve?
Considered as the pillars of education and the mentors of society. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established the 5th of October as a World Teachers' Day in 1994. Marking the day as a tribute to recognize their contributions to the society. In many schools in the Philippines, this celebration is commemorated with programs dedicated to teachers, alongside giving of small tokens of appreciation, and simple feasts shared inside the classroom.
To become a licensed teacher in the Philippines, one must finish basic and higher education, then pass the Licensure Examinations for Teachers (LET). This requires a full-time learning and preparation, with every ounce of dedication and sacrifice poured, but earning a license isn't the end, it's the beginning of a growing demand in the field of education.
However, before stepping into the role of a teacher, they are also parents, siblings, and someone's child—ordinary humans with unseen struggles that extend far beyond the classroom. Exhausted, stressed, sleepless and piled with work; in fact, according to the Year Two Report of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2), about two in every three teachers exceed the standard 40-hour workweek as a result of “repetitive paperwork" yet, they remain enthusiastic, cheerful, and packed with lessons ready to pass down to the youth. While they often receives the bare minimum from the system, yet they never let go of the dreams they once held — the dream of making an impact through teaching.
The struggles they face serves as reminder that their chosen profession carries a weight far greater than the responsibilities inside the classroom. Teachers are expected to live as good examples, for society has set them as role models for their students.
Thus, honoring teachers goes beyond a single day of celebration; the true recognition is in remembering the struggles they are continuously facing and carrying their valuable lessons for a lifetime, reminding them that they fulfilled their role of making an impact and influence to the students.
