On June 6, 2026, ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐น๐ฎ๐ต๐ถ, the official publication of the Supreme Student Council (SSC), joined SIBYA 14, a congress organized by the Crusader Publication of Xavier University โ Ateneo de Cagayan, held at SM CDO Downtown.
Anchored on the theme โ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป๐: ๐๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป,โ the event gathered student communicators across Northern Mindanao to strengthen their understanding of environmental journalism and its role in addressing ecological concerns.
The theme reflects the ongoing deterioration of the environment, where ecosystems are steadily degraded and natural resources continue to decline. These environmental changes intensify the impact of calamities, turning them into human experiences marked by loss, struggle, and resilience rather than isolated events. What may appear as separate incidents are in fact part of recurring patterns that increasingly affect vulnerable communities.
To further enrich the discussion, the congress featured three distinguished speakers: ๐ ๐. ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ, award-winning journalist and freelance editor at BicoldotPH; ๐ ๐. ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฎ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฏ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ด, award-winning journalist and Executive Director of Climate Tracker Asia; and ๐ ๐ฟ. ๐๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ป ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถรฑ๐ฎ๐, award-winning photojournalist and news feature writer. Through their talks, they emphasized the role of journalism in exposing environmental issues and giving voice to marginalized communities.
Building on these insights, SIBYA 14 highlighted the importance of ethical storytelling in shaping public awareness and driving meaningful response to environmental challenges.
One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of winners for the Photography and Essay Writing Competition. Representing Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN), ๐ ๐ฟ. ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฃ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฝ ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ฎ from the College of Education and Social Sciences (CESS) secured First Place in the Tertiary Level Essay Category with his piece titled โ๐๐ฎ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ด ๐๐ด ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐: ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ง๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ช๐ฒ ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ.โ
As the congress concluded, participants left with renewed purpose to continue telling stories that matter. For aspiring and young journalists, the message remains clear: ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป. Keep writing, keep questioning, and keep seeking the truth, because there are stories only you can tell.
SIBYA 14 stands as a reminder that responsible storytelling can expose issues, preserve experiences, and inspire action.
