COMMENTARY | Umugong at naging matunog ang panawagan ng mga organisasyon at pahayagang pangkampus sa Rehiyon ng Bicol dahil sa naging reaksyon at tirada ni Camarines Sur 2nd District Representative at ngayo’y Gubernatorial Aspirant Lray Villafuerte sa resulta ng 2025 Midterm Elections Preference Polls na inilabas ng The Spark, ang opisyal na pahayagan pangkampus at pangkomunidad ng Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges.

Lumalabas, ayon sa student survey, na nakakuha ng may pinakamataas na porsyento ng boto si Reporma’s standard-bearer B**g Rodriguez — 43%, at naungusan nito ang tumatakbong muli sa pagkagobernador, Lray Villafuerte, na nakakuha naman ng 30%.

Banat ni Villafuerte, “fake” umano ang survey. Ipinaskil rin nito sa kanyang facebook post ang larawan ng Associate Editor ng TheSpark, kakabit ng mga pahayag laban sa estudyante at pahayagan.

Naglabas rin ng opisyal na pahayag ang administrasyon ng CSPC at sinabing, “the survey’s results are based on the responses of only 498 participants, representing a very small portion of CSPC’s student population of over 14,000 students. As such, the results are neither comprehensive nor reflective of the sentiments of the entire student body.”

Dahil dito, nagkaisa ang iba’t-ibang organisasyon sa Bicol upang kundinahin ang umano'y panggigipit ng kongresista at ng CSPC sa The Spark at sa mga campus journalist sa pahayagan.

Patuloy na ipinananawagan ngayon ng iba't-ibang grupo ang pagprotekta at pagpapanagot sa sinumang sumusupil sa malayang pamamahayag.

Ngayong nalalapit na ang halalan, ano nga ba ang proteksyon ng mga mamamahayag laban sa mga naghaharing-uri at iba pang porma ng panggigipit at pagpapatahimik?

On this day 38 years ago, state forces opened fire on a peaceful assembly calling for land reform in Mendiola, killing 13 individuals and injuring dozens more. By subjecting farmers and advocates to bloodshed, the promise of democratization under then President Corazon Aquino was belied.

Despite promises in the 1986 draft of the Constitution to grant farmers ownership of the lands they till, such calls were left unheeded. Instead, programs like Emancipation Patents only perpetuated the same injustices, trapping farmers in cycles of poverty and debt under the pretense of progress.

Today, the same calls continue to reverberate as farmers remain entrenched in an unrelenting struggle against landlessness and violence. Peasant leaders still face harassment, red-tagging, and killings. Recently, youth peasant organizers Andy Magno and Vladimir Maro were forcibly disappeared by suspected state forces.

“The month of harvest is fast drawing near. But it will not only be of scant palay grains. The bloodbath at Mendiola is enough to sow more disquieted days,” Francine Medina wrote days after the massacre. Seeds of resistance only continue to grow as the struggle for land reform persists.
