Farmers Week celebration held--By Dessa May Nerva Durante

Naga City—Farmers Week celebration held at the city hall compound depicts a sitting similar with the old days due to the presence of makeshift stores made out of raw materials that include bamboos , nipa and other local materials.

The sitting also speaks about the picturesque how in the old days market stores really exist as melting pot of the day-to-day business activities and pursuits.

Well participated in by 27 barangays of the city, this year’s celebration of Farmers Day echoed a resounding success.
The affairs was spearhead by the City Agriculture office here headed by Maria Edna Bongalota.

From fruits, short term crops to & other products displayed name it and they have them! This is to sum up what was transpired during this year’s celebrations of Farmers Week held here to showcase the agri- crops produced by the city’s farmers. This was not purely showcasing of agri-produced alone as the occasion was also giving credits to the sweats and efforts make by the farmers here as one of the important players in producing primary needs for the consumers.

In the morning and in the afternoon panoramas at the city hall here, during the 3-day Farmers Week showcasing, depicts consumers how they were lined up to bring home what they can buy.

Business climate in the Philippines however has gone a long long way ahead. We started our business out of a barter scheme introduced by foreign traders, now we have currencies, the latest according to some business experts we might be using bit coins as a form of currency worldwide!

The good thing—is, the city government here strongly believes that farmers remain to be as one of the vital partners of growth and development.

PINCH: Pilipinas Every JUAN's Future, Calabanga Harampangan sa Banwaan 2016

Posters, tarpaulins, tv , radio , and social media ads; cars with loud speakers, house-to-house visits – name them whatever campaign strategies you have in mind, for sure, these politicians will do everything to win every single vote in the community.

Election, as they say, is a manifestation of a working democracy. It is a time to reevaluate the performances of our current public officials – whether they did well in their respective positions during their term of office or they have to be replaced by placing new names in the ballots in other cases.

I was lucky to be invited as one of the Panel Interviewers during the “Harampangan Sa Banwaan 2016,” debate forum of running public officials held at Calabanga, Camarines Sur, Philippines last April 29. Most of them, if not all of the running public officials, prioritize promoting and strengthening agricultural and fisheries sectors. Given the nature of the place, it’s quite obvious that running public officials of Calabanga will focus on these things. So meaning to say, we should check on the platforms of these politicians , whether they address the problems on the table during the forum. It would be ludicrous to promise putting up Light Railway Transit (LRT) system in Calabanga especially if people don’t find it necessary to have one.

Here we are. May 9 is fast approaching. I hope that Pilipinas Debates really works to help a lot for us to choose the president that will address the needs of our people and will represent our country in the international arena. Let us not be blind folded by money either. Our future as well as our names are not worth a thousand peso bill. Let us fight really for a free and fair elections. Juan Dela Cruz, let your voice be heard!

And as of today we hear clichés like “Sa aming lugar, ganito po kami”, “Ako po ang mag aayos ng palpak na serbisyo ng administrasyon”, “Pinapangako ko po na…” and other rhetoric and promises you can imagine in life. If desperate enough, these politicians may even promise you the stars! While it is true that words play an important part in assessing whether a politician is sincere or not, it is important also to assess track records and past achievements too. These tangible proofs speak for itself, whether a politician’s words does not contradict his/her actions. So watch out for inconsistencies! It is very important in assessing whether a politician is not only a man of words but also of actions.

As guaranteed by the 1987 Philippine Constitution, every citizen is entitled the “right to suffrage”. If you try to look at the sections about elected public officials, qualifications are on the bare minimum (i.e., able to read and write, years of residency, citizenship, age, etc). Probably one of the many reasons why that is the case is to make elections as inclusive as possible. The same way as we allow people to vote regardless of gender, economic status, and other possible restrictions, the Constitution provides a safeguard for unjust and discriminatory treatment to those who wish to vote and be voted upon.

Voting on the other hand, is both a right and an obligation. We hear a lot of lame excuses from some people not to vote like “Pareho lang naman yung maloloklok eh”, “Wala namang kwenta yung isang boto ko kung para sa lahat”, “Wala na akong pakialam, pareho lang naman sila corrupt”. And yet, we hear them complaining about unsatisfactory government services! Our vote is the social license for the government to legitimately operate and function. It is a way of renewing the social contract – an implicit agreement between the state and the people. This also means “the people voted for them, therefore, they should also do what is mandated them to do based on the law.” So technically, if someone chose to abstain, he/she is not part of the social contract. By extension, that person should not also complain if mistakes are to be made.

And if some people say that all politicians are bad, then maybe we can choose someone who is, at least, the “lesser evil”. So therefore, there should not be an excuse for an individual to abstain. The fact that assistance to senior citizens and person’s with disabilities (PWD) are given on voting precincts only means that Commissions on Elections (COMELEC) always ensures that everyone can vote and voting is accessible as much as possible.

Our vote is the powerful tool to have and use against government abuses. It also reminds public officials of the problems they may have overlooked. As servants of the people, they must see to it that the needs of their constituents are listed in the priorities.

Editorial: This is the most certain!

Two days left and our long wait is over, we will have our new president and vice president respectively.

However, this is not the end of our pursuit yet. We only elected them, who will occupy the relinquished seat of power for the next six years this coming June.

Their performances, how are they going to govern this country, is a thing to watch!

Let’s take another look: Mar Roxas is aiming for a decent Philippines, on the other hand, Duterte is planning to go back in the old system.

One of his fearful pronouncements made , was , if in case congress shall not cooperate in favor of his will, he is planning to put up a revolutionary government to dissolve the House.

While Binay is –on, to make Philippines a better place to live in, by what he perceived changes under his command.

And Grace Poe, who grapples all the advantageous stance of winning, will be for “the repair” on what she believes are damaged/lapses under the Tuwid Na Daan.

Never mind for Miriam though I am in her considering the intelligence and all that but the timing remains elusive in her part for the dreamed presidency.

But take note: Though we have new leaders in the next days to come the good luck and better living condition one would desire still depend upon our shoulders, how are we going to traverse poverty remains at stakes. This is the most certain!

Voice of the youth: Farmers Week in the city --By Dessa May Nerva Durante

Why we need to celebrate and give our farmers due recognition ?

One thing is certain, they are important! They are equally essential perhaps with the presence of towering buildings erected that we can see around the city.

Yes, because without the farmers we do not have these sumptuous food stuffs in our markets. If there’s no food to eat on the table, do you think we can eat or bite buildings, beautiful houses, and or can we boil our cellphones for a tea?

We use to laugh then! But this is true isn’t?

That is why we have to celebrate Farmers Week, to give our farmers due recognition, as well as to appreciate their bounty harvest!

I never grew up in the farm, only that I uses to see farmlands. The only thing I uses to know more about life in the farms is when father started narrating his life, how he finished school while engaged in agriculture.

Sometimes I kept on laughing specially once he said that he used to walk 4 kilometers or more just to go to school… hey, I said where was that father!

But it’s true … he said, they lived in the outskirts of the town, there was no concrete roads then in the area, and if there’s one it was pockmarked by big holes specially during rainy days, according to him, the reason why there is no regular passenger jeep routing in the area.

It was fun you know knowing the life in the fields, but to make it as our daily source of income is not easy. From planting grains up to the harvest time, I have no doubt that it’s more than sweats of one’s labor.

Whether you favor it or not, I would say that agriculture remains to be the backbone of our economy.

In terms of short-term crops, some of our products are for exports. In Mindanao as well as in Northern part of Luzon , say for example, our vast crops there are not only intended for our consumptions, but our neighboring countries also rely in our agri-crops.

This was not the first the city government under the leadership of Mayor John Bongat celebrates Farmers Week, I knew it because every summertime like this I used to see similar celebration.

In fact, I couldn’t remember it anymore when this was started, But I ‘m sure it was long long time ago, how the city here would group the farmers every summer like this in order to showcase their harvest.

What is significant here is that though we are a fast growing city in the south in terms of progress and development yet the city officials here still recognize the farmers as partners of growth. (Until now my father uses to plant short term crops adjacent to our lots. Photos I used here are plants by my father. We never buy vegetables anymore, we just pick right in our backyard !

We have cucumber, Okra, beans, cassava, pumpkins, lemon and almost all crops).

The right time to teach our children--By Maita Nerva Durante

To become a mother isn’t an easy task. We need to deal with different forms of problems meet along the way. As our kids grow up we have to adjust with them too.

It is not good that we do all the household chores alone?… hello! Modesty aside, I have done these for the past 20 years, so that what had happened with our kids when I gone at the scenes for quite a couple of weeks , that until now I am recuperating, due to my severe condition?

They were like lost in the ocean tides or wilderness , don’t know what to do.

Now, once I do fixing, Deo would say, never mind , allow our children to do that by themselves.

Without letting them know what works in the house is all about would speaks of two things: One we allow them to become depend. Second, we let them deprive about the things they need to know, for instance, at their early stage.

As they grow up we need to teach them the tasks.

Because there’s no mother forever, there are no children forever. In real life, there’s no forever existing ! All has its own time and due.

Except… except I would repeat, the LOVE that the Lord God endows us to have. HIS LOVE is forever and everlasting!

To continue… we need to teach them fixing their beds, cleaning the house, cooking and as well as doing laundry.
If possible at their early stage they must learn all these things around.

Otherwise, if we don’t do that we never love our children because we teach them how to learn alone what we must teach them to know, while still in the stages of growth.

Life is a stage composition .Time come they will also become parents. We know that, as for our kids they must know them too! Not to let them communicate with their laptops or cellphones in the whole day round, that it will make them nonproductive.

How are we going to know that they are fully matured? Well, it’s easy, once they have their own decision making. They must possess with a kind of attitude that they need not to be told of something so that they will move.

Once they are moving with their own, that’s the time that we can conclude we have now a fully grown up and matured man and woman, who happened to be once our kids moving their gestures at the cliff of our wings!

So, at this stage we need to let them go. I mean, let them decide what is good for them rather than controlling them most of the time.

By looking back, we have achieved what is needed to be achieved, that is how to become mothers or parents to our children!

Isn’t nice to hear that?
