, World Habitat Day gives us the chance to celebrate the contributions of youth to sustainable urbanization while addressing the urgent challenges of rapid urban growth. It reminds us that each of us holds the power and responsibility to shape the future of human habitats.

The United Nations declared the first Monday of October each year as World Habitat Day to encourage reflection on the state of our living spaces and to affirm the basic right of all people to adequate shelter.

Every person deserves a safe place to call home, and the choices we make today will decide whether future generations inherit cities of hope or face landscapes of struggleโ€”this is the call of World Habitat Day.

Let us reflect and take action by addressing the multiple crises that affect our cities, including climate change and conflict, which fuel inequality. Together, we can strengthen solutions that promote resilience, inclusivity, and effective crisis response.

When people think of knights, images of shining armor, castles, and battles often come to mind. Knights are usually remembered as figures of the Middle Ages who lived by codes of honor, loyalty, and service. What many do not realize is that knighthood did not disappear with history books.

Across Europe, centuries-old orders still exist to recognize people who embody these same values in modern life. These orders no longer honor knights in shining armor, but instead men and women who have shown dedication, integrity, and service to others.

On September 13, 2025, inside the historic St. Michaelโ€™s Church in Vienna, one of those modern knights was honored. Among the distinguished individuals who were invested into the Order of the Golden Spur was Maria Zelda Magistrado Rojas, who once taught physics at Camarines Sur National High School between 1987 and 1991.

Her years at CSNHS were spent in the Science Department, where she dedicated four years to teaching physics. For many of her former students, she was not only an educator but also a mentor who showed patience and commitment inside and outside the classroom. It was this early devotion to guiding others that became a foundation for the recognition she received decades later in Vienna.

The investiture ceremony of the Order of the Golden Spur is steeped in history. The Order, known in German as Ritterorden zum Goldenen Sporn, is one of Europeโ€™s oldest chivalric institutions. Its motto is โ€œAvitus et famam tueturโ€ which translates to โ€œAncient and guardian of honor.โ€

Over the centuries, it has recognized individuals who have shown dedication to cultural, humanitarian, and spiritual values. But, admission into the Order is not something one applies for. Instead, members are carefully chosen and invited after years of service, achievement, or contributions that reflect the ideals of the institution.

The ceremony in Vienna followed traditions that have been passed down for generations. It began with a formal procession of members and honorees, followed by a Holy Mass celebrated by Military Chaplain Christoph Gmachl-Aher. The Grand Prior of Austria welcomed the guests, and the Grand Master, His Imperial and Royal Highness Sandor von Habsburg-Lothringen, gave words on the importance of unity, tradition, and character. During the investiture, Maria Zelda Magistrado Rojas was formally accepted and knighted into the Order. A simple reception known as an agape, closed the gathering and emphasized fellowship over grandeur.

What makes this moment meaningful is not just the centuries-old ritual or the historic setting, but the personal story behind it. For someone who once stood in front of a classroom in CamHigh, guiding young students through the challenges of physics, and being recognized on an international stage shows how far acts of dedication and service can reach. Her knighthood is not about prestige alone but also about honoring a lifetime of contributions and a character shaped by years of teaching and serving others.

In celebrating her investiture, those who remember her days in CSNHS are reminded that teachers can leave lasting marks that go beyond textbooks and classrooms. The applause and solemn blessings were not just for a new member of an ancient order, but also for a teacher whose service and dedication have traveled across time and borders.

Today, October 5, World Teachersโ€™ Day is held to recognize the important role of our teachers in our lives and to address the challenges they face in their profession.

The celebration was established to commemorate the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation, which acknowledges the significant contributions and rights of teachers around the world.

As we celebrate Teachersโ€™ Day, we thank the heroes who light our paths with knowledge and kindness, inspiring us to become better every day!

Ghosted, plundered, and corrupted. These words prove the harsh reality of the Philippines' system today: a crisis. The issue about the anomalous flood control projects wraps up the corruption happening in the country. This act by the sectors of the government is not only a fatal flaw for the nation but a storm for the citizens to be flooded and drowned into poverty.

On the second day of the Senate panel on financeโ€™s meeting with the Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC), Finance Secretary Ralph Recto stated that the anomalous ghost flood control projects have cost the Philippine economy up to P118.5 billion from 2023 to 2025. Imagine that the money we pay is just being used by those corrupt politicians for their own benefit, not even feeling a hint of guilt after stealing the peopleโ€™s money.

The corruption in the Philippines started even before the issue as of now, yet how come this problem comes up repeatedly? Is it the systemโ€™s flaws or is it our flaw to blame?

During elections, we, the citizens, are the ones who vote; we choose our leaders, our governors, yet we make the same mistakes redundantly. This proves that even during elections, our minds are being corrupted by their bribery, two-facedness, and more importantly, greed; not for a good society, but for money. And that is because corruption starts even before they govern, and that is the root which we should pluck before being planted.

At the time of voting, we expect the ones we voted for to win without even thinking about the skills of the other candidates who also want to lead our country with honesty and a true passion for serving, not for power, titles, or money. Before the voting even starts, illegal actions like vote-buying and political dynasties are already in place and influence peopleโ€™s choices. We are scared of facing corruption, but the lack of responsibility is even more frightening than the problem itself. Ignoring accountability is like walking straight to our own graves; dying before death comes.

The situation in the Philippines not only puts the countryโ€™s funds at risk but also the trust of the people. It is important to build trust within a nation to create stronger bonds and achieve success together with its citizens. However, from the looks of it, we are far from success, especially now that citizens are doubting the capability and skills of leaders to govern the country with determination toward success, not failure. Corruption should never be part of the governance dictionary; instead, determination, discipline, and passion to lead should be engraved not only in books but also in the minds of those in power.

While the countryโ€™s leaders are benefiting themselves from the money they stole, the people from different places, especially those experiencing serious floods because of the typhoons, are suffering not just because of the typhoon itself but because of the thought that each peso is being spent by someone who did not even work for it. Treating themselves to relaxation is not prohibited, but the rule does not apply to stealing. It is stated in Republic Act No. 19051 that robbery of over 4,400,000 pesos must be punished, even for those holding government titles. This is already stated in the law, yet no actions are taken. We cannot just turn a blind eye to this robbery. Even if itโ€™s just a peso, it does not change the fact that they stole. The law is the law, and everyone is bound by it, even those corrupt politicians.

There is no doubt that resting and treating oneself to luxury is a reasonable way to enjoy life after stressing over documents for the whole country; however, there is no valid reason for anyone to steal or misuse the peopleโ€™s funds just to afford luxury cars, branded clothes, and expensive jewelry. That is not relaxation, it is absurdity and delusion.

Corruption has been present even before governance, and it is our responsibility to be aware and alert about what to do during times of crisis. We should be the ones leading what is supposed to be, not unaccountable in terms of a nationโ€™s situation. We should be responsible when voting and during elections so that even before corruption starts, the weeds have been plucked before being planted.
