From fires and earthquakes to volcanic eruptions, we are taught to be resilient. We learn to duck, cover, and hold โ€” or to stop, drop, and roll โ€” because being prepared can save lives. This is the heart of what National Disaster Resilience Month teaches us: to understand what to do, how to do it, and why it matters. It's a month dedicated to unity, preparedness, and action when it counts the most.

We, the people of the Philippines โ€” the Pearl of the Orient Seas โ€” are located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and typhoons. This geographical reality makes us more vulnerable to natural disasters. Itโ€™s as if our nation wears a ring of calamities around its hand โ€” a heavy burden that we must carry with courage and awareness. That is why readiness is not a choice but a necessity.

To address this, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) leads the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month every July. Its goal is to promote knowledge on disaster risk reduction, preparedness, and mitigation. It serves as a guiding force, helping us build habits of resilience and encouraging every community to take proactive steps before disaster strikes.

Disasters may come without warning, but our strength lies in our collective action. When we move as one โ€” aware, prepared, and united โ€” we lessen the damage and quicken recovery. Proactivity means being ready before the worst happens. Resilience means rising above challenges through a culture of preparedness that we build together.

As the ground shakes or the skies darken, we are reminded that the greatest defense lies not in the walls we build, but in the knowledge we share and the unity we uphold. This month is more than a reminder โ€” it is a call to action. In the face of disaster, let us stand not as victims, but as a nation prepared to rise.

๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ข๐—ž | Bringing renewed hope and much-needed academic support to students, the renovated Raul S. Roco Library reopened its doors for everyone this morning, June 15, 2025.

According to Mayor Leni Robredo, while renovations are still ongoing and additional features are set to be added, the library was reopened ahead of completion in response to the pressing need for accessible learning spaces.

โ€œGusto ta magprovide ning lugar kun saen nakakagibo sinda projects na dai na sinda mabayad. Ready na si mga work stations saka mga libro. As of now, [โ€ฆ] may 10 na laptops na pwede nindang gamiton. Pinakusog ta man si internetโ€”makusog na si Wi-Fi ngonian, dati kaya mayo,โ€ she highlighted.

When truth is under attack, resilience becomes a duty. Resilient in his pursuit, GMA News Anchor Emil Sumangil revealed the key whistleblower Julie โ€œTotoyโ€ Patidongan, a key witness of the 34 missing sabungeros which left the Filipino citizens alarmed. Behind Emilโ€™s brave demeanor on screen, daggers of death dressed as unseen hands pierced through his skin as the daggers of death made its way on his back. The studio lights flicker more as the surrounding darkness eventually dominates the room and ironically, his name that used to be mentioned after his news reports, is on the forefront cover of several news pages today. He knew that pursuing journalism as a lifetime career to deliver the truth, uncover crimes, and seek justice to the marginalized comes at a high cost, yet his integrity stands unshaken even if it means to risk being the victim himself.

The โ€œMissing Sabungerosโ€ case is in fact an old news gone cold in the greater Manila area such as Laguna, Batangas, Bulacan and Manila dating from April 2021 to January 2022 .The case remained untouched but mysteriously left three police officers indicted for the disappearance of Ricardo Lasco, one of the 34 missing individuals. Now that it has reopened, Sumangil bravely took over and reported the case to the media with a louder voice. and according to Patidongan, these sabungeros were allegedly abducted by syndicates and corrupt officials. Then, Patidongan came out of the shadows that belonged to several prime syndicates and corrupt officials who had abducted a number of sabungeros, who were suspected of cheating, away from their families. Cockfighting, locally known as sabong, is legal in the Philippines under specific conditions and has long walked the line between tradition and transgression. In sabong, deceit is part of the game. These men may have desperately cheated each other, the odds, and the system but in the end, none of them successfully cheated death. The arena they stepped into was far darker than any, where the final bet was their own disappearance.

However, going through such a meticulous and calculated plan only reveals the sheer desperation of the perpetrator who is deeply troubled, exposed, and now willing to silence the truth at any cost. But with this panicked move, it becomes evident that they may be either someone caught in a deeper sabong cheating scheme where it goes far beyond than money or a high-ranking official determined to protect their reputation.

Does this mean that growing journalists may meet the same fate if they stood in Emilโ€™s shoes?

There will always be someone who will, by any means, silence the voice of truth. They thrive in a treacherous nature driven mostly by greed and the desire to have authority over others with the belief that the true power that controls the world is money. Money that most people strive desperately to get to meet ends. Yet the price of truth is and shall always be invaluable. The pen used by journalists to write articles is fueled not only by their own blood, sweat, and tears but also the cries of the victims and families through every written word. It is a narration of their story in the rawest form as journalists stand united with authorities to deliver justice with a louder voice and a sharper pen. The craft of a journalist is to stand where others cannot, and speak what others will not, and the collective effort of journalists to spread truth is for the sake of bringing justice to the people.

May this event not strike fear into young journalists, but ignite themโ€”knowing that their pen and voice cut deeper and roar louder than any threat.

โ€œOkay lang โ€˜yan, basta busog,โ€ a phrase muttered and reiterated by Filipinos which not only creates a lasting impression on the development of the body, but also echoes at the back of our minds. This toxic mentality where fullness is valued over nourishment continues to fuel poor dietary habits among vulnerable communities [a][b][c]that highlights a deeper concern about the awareness and mindfulness of the people when it comes to health.

Due to the endless battle of living to survive, we tend to forget the importance of a balanced diet. According to the Department of Health (DOH), malnutrition remains a concern in the Philippines, with over 3.4 million children affected by stunted growth.

As we embrace the beginning of July, let us take this opportunity to celebrate and promote proper nutrition, in line with the Presidential Decree 491, Nutrition Act of the Philippines, signed by Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1974.

With the theme, "Sa PPAN: Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat!โ€ The Department of Education (DepEd) encourages the notion of proper nutrition as a basic right rather than a privilege. Together, we can promote collective action in fostering a healthier, well-nourished nation where every Filipino, regardless of age, gender, status, or location, has access to sustainable and adequate nutrition.

This month serves as a meaningful reminder to take proper care of our bodiesโ€”the vessels that carry us throughout life.

With a little twist from the Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG), students swarmed the Naga City Science High School (NCSHS) Covered Court to connect with school clubs for the Organi-SCI-tion Year 6 last July 4, 2025.

Implementation of the booth passport had students swarming the venue and buzzing with excitement, encouraging them to explore each booth, earning a stamp after visiting and purchasing merchandise.

โ€œI think that the use of passports motivated and influenced students to join the clubs, seeing as it made the experience more interactive for me,โ€ a student from Batch Stellarius shared.

Niรฑo Sarto and Brianna Ascaรฑo of Batch Seraphinus won the raffle, rewarding them with an Organi-SCI-tion-themed tote bag; while Sports Federation earned the Nagueniansโ€™ Choice Award and the Drum, Xylophone, Majorette Corps (DXMC), the Booth of the Year.

On the other hand, while many expressed their satisfaction and enjoyment for the memorable event, a few also wished that the venue wasnโ€™t too crowded and there was more time to visit the booths.

The large moth you see flying around or on social media isn't a visit from the deceased, but a cry from the living.

In Metro Manila, people have reported many sightings of a giant brown moth fluttering around the streets and residential areas. It's known as the tropical swallowtail moth, a species native to Southeast Asia.

These moths usually live in dark, quiet forests, so their sudden appearance in the bright, buzzing city is quite unexpected. While many have their own interpretations of their sudden appearance, itโ€™s likely that theyโ€™ve simply been forced out of their natural habitat.

As climate change brings more intense dry spells and heatwaves, trees shed more of their own leavesโ€“providing an abundance of food for caterpillars and causing their population to boom.

This increase in the caterpillar population comes with a higher demand for food. When that food supply runs out, adult moths are forced out of the forest that can no longer sustain them.

Flying out to the city is arduous, and not all survive, and the ones that do live now reside with the people, going from one wall to another. Yet, their efforts are in vain as there is no food or place for them here in the city.

These giant moths are losing their home one leaf at a time, and their arrival in the city is a gentle warning that they, too, are affected by the heat. This phenomenon is the forest's way of crying out for help, and weโ€™d be wise to listen to it before it goes silent.
