I don’t do freestyle and I’m a choreography-based dancer. I’ve always been more comfortable following a routine than creating one on the fly.
You can see on this clip that I did repetitive, and stiff movements, I am not used to it but I tried. Freestyle forces you to tap into your creativity in a raw, unfiltered way, and I admit, it’s uncomfortable for someone who’s used to the structure of planned routines.
Going out of your comfort zone is fun sometimes. For any dancers out there who feel the same way—who feel stiff when the music starts with no steps to follow—know that it’s okay to mess up. Every attempt teaches you more about your body, and your rhythm. Freestyle might not be my strength yet, but trying it made me appreciate dance even more.
