This painting depicts one of the most famous moments in the life of Alexander the Great. While campaigning in Asia, Alexander became seriously ill. At the same time, he received a letter warning that his physician, Philip of Acarnania, had been bribed to poison him.
Instead of believing the accusation, Alexander drank the medicine while handing the warning letter to Philip, showing that he trusted his physician completely. The medicine cured him, and the accusation proved to be false.
The painting is less about illness and more about trust, loyalty, and courage. It captures the moment Alexander chose confidence over suspicion, demonstrating that great leadership sometimes requires faith in those who have earned it.

The Gleaners depicts three peasant women collecting leftover stalks of wheat after the harvest has ended. This practice, known as gleaning, allowed the poor to gather what remained in the fields after landowners had finished harvesting.
Although the foreground focuses on the women bending to pick up a few scattered stalks, the background tells a different story: overflowing haystacks, wagons, and abundant harvests. This contrast highlights the gap between wealth and poverty, showing that while plenty exists, not everyone shares equally in it.
