I’m really frustrated with myself right now.
Yesterday, I was genuinely happy because I finally decided to cut my hair. It’s been so heavy and tiring to take care of — I use a lot of shampoo, it takes so long to dry, and sometimes it even gives me headaches because it’s so thick and long, already reaching near my legs. I was also excited because I could finally sell it. I was hoping to earn around ₱5,000 since I’ve heard that hair like mine is expensive.
I’ve sold my hair twice before. The first time, I cut it up to my waist and got ₱500. The second time, I cut it again from near my waist and only got ₱1,000. Back then, I was still young and didn’t know anything — I didn’t realize people actually buy hair for much higher prices. Later, I found out that my hair was worth so much more and that those people basically took advantage of me.
So this time, I promised myself I’d grow it long again and sell it properly — maybe even for ₱5,000. I planned to sell it at a salon since they usually offer fairer prices. But because of my situation, I couldn’t afford to go to a salon far from our place. So I decided to call a local hair buyer — the kind who goes around buying hair.
I was the one who called them, hoping that when they’d see how thick and long my hair was, they might consider buying it for 5k. Since our house is hard to reach, we met at another place that was easier for them to find. When they saw my hair, they said there were a lot of white strands, so they could only buy it for ₱1,000. I was disappointed because I expected more, so I politely refused and apologized for making them come all the way.
I even offered to just give them a small amount for gas — maybe ₱50 — since they arrived quickly after my call (it only took them a few minutes to get there).
But then they started bargaining again and at the same time saying something to make me feel guilty. The woman said, “₱1,200… ₱1,500… ₱1,700…” then finally, “₱1,900.” I still refused because I thought maybe if I went to a salon, I could get at least ₱3,000 even with all the white strands.
The woman said always making me feel guilty, and saying there were too many white hairs anyway. My friend, who was with me the whole time, didn’t say much when I was refusing. But when I left to get change for the ₱500 bill — which was actually her money (so I could still give something for their gas) — she told me, “It’s your decision, but you really do have a lot of white hair.”
While I was away, the woman offered ₱2,000 and said she’d also give a small share to my friend since she helped me. That made me think — my friend really helped me a lot, and I didn’t have any money to give her. At least this way, she could get something too. And honestly, I really needed the money for my work — just something to help even a little — and I was already tired of dealing with my hair. So I just told myself, *“Sige na lang.”* That’s why I finally agreed.
When it was time to cut my hair, I clearly said, “Just up to my neck.” But they cut it way too short — much shorter than what I asked for. At that moment, I just froze and let it happen.
Nothing turned out the way I expected. Instead of giving them gas money, my hair ended up being the payment. I thought I’d finally get a fair price, but I ended up giving in again.
And now I’m so mad at myself. Why do I always end up getting taken advantage of? Why do I keep letting people do this to me? Why do I always give in, even when I know it’s not fair?
It’s not just about my hair anymore — it’s about me always ending up like this. I really hate this part of myself… the part that stays quiet, gives in easily, and keeps getting fooled.
