"Sasalang kayo Sir?"

A group of Nazarene devotees from Malate, Manila waits patiently at the side of Ayala Bridge for the carriage of the Black Nazarene to pass around 10:00 am, January 9.
"Sasalang" is a word derived from "salang" meaning "to put on or over something" but for a Nazarene devotee, it means going up at the andas to wipe their towel or to hold and kiss the image or cross and whisper their wishes.
"Yung mga bata na lang ang sasalang. Tapos na kami. Sumalang na yung iba kanina." one group member answered. They have been devotees of the Nazarene for so many years and they continue the devotion even though some of them choose to just walk barefooted or assist the young ones who want to climb the "andas".
