NEWS | Fr. Albert Marfil, OFM on Dialogue: “If you can dialogue with yourself, you can listen to others”

On September 15 and 16, 2025, a two-day conference was held at the Our Lady of the Angels Seminary where Fr. Albert Marfil, OFM, a Filipino missionary serving in Japan, delivered an inspiring talk on the role of dialogue in formation, community life, and apostolic mission.

Fr. Marfil emphasized that a genuine atmosphere of trust and respect is essential for meaningful dialogue to thrive. He spoke on the evolving posture of dialogue, underlining attentive listening and sincere understanding as its core elements.

“If you can dialogue with yourself, then you can eventually listen to others,” he noted.

On the second day, he facilitated a group activity with the OFM aspirants, inviting them to share and reflect on guided questions. He explained that dialogue nurtures an inclusive mindset and helps us recognize the unique “otherness” of each person. By valuing differences, he added, “we grow in our understanding and appreciation of our own identity.”

Fr. Marfil’s reflections stand as a timely reminder of the transformative power of dialogue which is for personal growth, for building community, and for deepening the mission.

Almighty God, you renewed the marks of the sufferings of your Son in the body of our holy Father Francis in order to inflame our hearts with the fire of your love. Through his prayers may we be made comformable to the death of your Son and thus share also in his resurrection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
