Saint Berard and his Companions were early 13th-century Franciscan friars and the Protomartyrs of the Seraphic Order, distinguished by their missionary zeal and fearless proclamation of the Gospel. Sent by Saint Francis of Assisi to Morocco, they preached Christ openly to both Christians and Muslims, fully aware of the dangers they faced.
Despite repeated warnings and imprisonment, they remained steadfast in their mission and refusal to abandon their faith. In 1220, they were martyred for their bold witness to Christ, becoming the first Franciscans to shed their blood for the Gospel.
Saint Berard and his Companions are remembered as models of evangelical courage, obedience, and total self-giving, whose martyrdom inspired the rapid growth of the Franciscan mission and strengthened the Churchโs witness to Christ.
