Saint Berard and his Companions were early 13th-century Franciscan friars and the Protomartyrs of the Seraphic Order, distinguished by their missionary zeal and fearless proclamation of the Gospel. Sent by Saint Francis of Assisi to Morocco, they preached Christ openly to both Christians and Muslims, fully aware of the dangers they faced.

Despite repeated warnings and imprisonment, they remained steadfast in their mission and refusal to abandon their faith. In 1220, they were martyred for their bold witness to Christ, becoming the first Franciscans to shed their blood for the Gospel.

Saint Berard and his Companions are remembered as models of evangelical courage, obedience, and total self-giving, whose martyrdom inspired the rapid growth of the Franciscan mission and strengthened the Churchโ€™s witness to Christ.

Saint Francis Ferdinand de Capillas was a 17th-century Dominican priest and martyr, known for his missionary zeal and faithful witness to Christ in the Philippines, especially in Cagayan, and later in China. Ordained in Manila, he dedicated himself to preaching the Gospel, forming Christian communities, and serving the faithful with pastoral charity and perseverance.

After years of missionary work in the Philippines, he was sent to China, where he continued his apostolic ministry amid great danger and persecution. Despite threats and imprisonment, he remained steadfast in proclaiming the Christian faith.

The Seraphic Order rejoices as yesterday, in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the 8th Centenary of the Transitus of St. Francis was solemnly opened. Gathered in prayer with the Minister Generals of the three branches of the First Order, the Franciscan family commemorated the blessed passing of the Poverello from this life to the Father, renewing our communion, fraternity, and commitment to live the Gospel in humility, poverty, and peace.
