Akeanon News Expands to Broadcast Media with Launch of "Akeanon News On Air" on ANC

KALIBO, Aklan – Akeanon News Publishing Services is set to make another historic milestone as it officially launches "Akeanon News On Air" on July 28, 2026, through the newly established Aklan News Channel (ANC).

The new program will air every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, featuring comprehensive local news, public affairs, government updates, business, tourism, culture, community stories, and special interviews that matter to Aklanons.

The launch is spearheaded by Noel R. Cabobos, Station Manager of Aklan News Channel, whose vision is to establish ANC as a trusted multi-platform news network dedicated to serving the people of Aklan through credible, relevant, and community-driven journalism.

Anchored by veteran broadcasters Recto Vidal and Roben Laserna, Akeanon News On Air aims to strengthen public awareness by delivering timely and accurate information while highlighting stories from the province's 17 municipalities.

The launch forms part of ANC's vision of "Beyond Headlines: The New Era of Broadcasting," a multi-platform news network committed to providing depth, context, hyper-local reporting, and meaningful stories that matter most to Aklanons.
For Akeanon News, the move marks a significant expansion from print and digital journalism into television broadcasting, reinforcing its commitment to responsible journalism and public service. Led by CEO/ Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Giecel Toriano Albar, the organization continues to uphold its mission of giving voice to the people through its guiding principle, "Your Views, Our Voice."

The official launch on July 28, 2026, marks the beginning of a new partnership between Akeanon News Publishing Services and Aklan News Channel, bringing together experienced journalists and broadcasters to deliver reliable, balanced, and community-centered news to every Aklanon.

Philippine Red Cross Conducts RC143 Basic Training and Instructor Course to Strengthen Community Disaster Resilience

To enhance community-level response and disaster preparedness, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) gathered its RC143 staff, chapter administrators and some Board of Directors of Region 6, 7 & 8 for a two-day Basic Training and Instructor Course at PRC National Headquarte
rs, Mandaluyong, Metro Manila.

The training program aims to equip participants with critical knowledge, structural understanding, and disaster risk reduction skills to better serve their respective barangays.

Dr. Gwendolyn T. Pang, Secretary General of the Philippine Red Cross, emphasized the crucial role of 143 volunteers in building resilient communities and saving lives. She futher stressed the critical nature of this training in ensuring we are fully prepared for worst-case disaster scenarios.

First, participants were introduced to the history, core principles, mission, and organizational structure of the Philippine Red Cross and the RC143 program; second, a dedicated session focused on defining the specific roles, functions, and responsibilities of RC143 volunteers at the grassroots barangay level; and third, an interactive session and workshop on disaster preparedness.

Through interactive lectures, video presentations, and collaborative discussions, the RC143 Basic Training ans Instructor Course ensures that community volunteers are well-prepared to act as first responders during emergencies, reinforcing the Red Cross's commitment to saving lives and supporting vulnerable communities across the nation.
PRC Aklan was represented by Chapter Administrator Mary Joe Galeon, Board Director and RCY President Christian Caballe, and Chapter 143 volunteer Melrose 'Megs' Lunn.

The training was also held in observance of National Disaster Resilience Month 2026.

Rotary Clubs Partner with Knowledge Channel to Boost Literacy for Remote Learners

In a powerful collaboration aimed at transforming rural education, local Rotary clubs recently met with the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) to brainstorm innovative strategies for making learning more engaging and accessible for underserved children.

The strategic meeting was led by KCFI Vice President Mr. Edric Calma, alongside Ms. Liberty Reyes, KCFI Resource Mobilization.

Working in tandem are the Rotary Club of Metro Kalibo (District 3850), represented by Immediate Past President Nora Helber, Club Mentor/Trainor Megs Lunn, Director Public Image Ricky Molo, and the Rotary Club of Pasay Southeast (District 3810), represented by Past Presidents Ellen B. Landicho and Pamela Nadura.

The primary focus of the brainstorming session centered on a proposed Global Grant designed to bring sustainable educational solutions to "low-milers" or in remote, underserved public schools in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (Philippines).

By combining KCFI’s proven educational media with Rotary’s robust community network, the partnership aims to bridge the learning gap for children who lack access to traditional educational resources.

"Our goal is simple yet profound, to create lasting impact in response to Basic Education and Literacy. Every child, no matter how remote, deserves a fair chance at quality education."

This initiative directly aligns with Rotary International’s Area of Focus to Basic Education and Literacy, proving once again that when passionate organizations unite, local solutions can yield global impact.

PAPI Leaders Pay Courtesy Call on Leyte Governor Petilla Ahead of 30th National Press Congress

TACLOBAN CITY – Preparations for the 30th PAPI National Press Congress gained support after PAPI President Rebecca "Beck" Velasquez, PAPI Vice President for Visayas Giecel Toriano-Albar, Mia Mallari for Logistics, and Binsoy for communications paid a courtesy call on Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho "Icot" Petilla ahead of the event set for December 3–5, 2026.

The meeting, facilitated by Ms. Jean Ragud of DOST Region 8, focused on possible partnerships and logistical support for the congress.

The PAPI delegation presented plans for the gathering, which will bring together publishers, editors, journalists, and media practitioners from across the country to promote press freedom, media collaboration, and innovation in Philippine journalism while highlighting Leyte as host province.

PAPI thanked Governor Petilla for his support and DOST Region 8, especially Ms. Jean Ragud, for helping make the event possible.

The congress is expected to unite media leaders nationwide in support of responsible journalism and stronger industry collaboration.

PAPI Takes Part in DOST Region 8 Science Innovation Tour

TACLOBAN CITY — It was an honor and privilege to represent the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI) as Vice President for Visayas during the 2026 Regional Science and Technology Innovation Week (RSTW) in Tacloban City from July 15 to 17.

Together with PAPI President Rebecca "Beck" Velasquez, Mia Mallari, who handled logistics, and Binsoy, who managed communications and media coverage, I served as part of the official PAPI media delegation and invited guests of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 8.

One of the highlights of our three-day visit was witnessing the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Regional Science and Technology Innovation Week (RSTW), where government officials, innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, and industry leaders gathered to celebrate the role of science, technology, and innovation in driving sustainable development and economic growth in Eastern Visayas.

Another memorable experience was participating in the DOST Science Innovation Tour led by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., together with Undersecretary Sancho A. Mabborang, Assistant Secretary Engr. Maria Theresa Bien-De Guzman, Regional Director Dr. John Glenn D. Ocaña, and the dedicated DOST Region 8 team. Secretary Solidum was the distinguished guest of honor during the RSTW celebration.

During the MSME tour, Regional Director Dr. John Glenn D. Ocaña personally introduced each featured enterprise to Secretary Solidum, highlighting their inspiring success stories and the impact of the DOST Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) in helping local businesses improve productivity, enhance product quality, expand their markets, and create employment opportunities.

Our itinerary included visits to the breathtaking Sohoton Cave, SAOB Cave and its thriving weaving community, the LARA (Local Alternative Raw Materials) Center in Basey, Samar, and Mr. Grey Doughnuts and Coffee, one of Tacloban City's successful DOST-assisted MSMEs.

Founded by spouses Galvin Ray and Maine Contreras during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Grey Doughnuts and Coffee transformed from a home-based business into one of the city's favorite cafés through DOST SETUP assistance. With upgraded equipment and continued technology support, the enterprise significantly increased production, expanded its operations, created more jobs, and became a model of how science and innovation can help Filipino entrepreneurs succeed.

The three-day Regional Science and Technology Innovation Week also featured exhibits from researchers, innovators, startups, academic institutions, government agencies, and MSMEs, showcasing Filipino ingenuity and the important role of science and technology in nation-building.

As an official media partner, PAPI remains committed to promoting science, technology, innovation, and the inspiring stories of Filipino MSMEs that continue to transform communities across the country.
