COLUMN

The U.S. case of expansionism and its imprudent transgression of Venezuela’s sovereignty is not only a matter of regional takeover but, gravely so, a direct threat to the current multilateral peace.

In the dead of night on the third of January 2026, the United States (U.S) launched an extensive operation to abduct the Venezuelan President Nicolás

BREAKING: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed the P6.793-trillion national budget for fiscal year 2026 into law.

Enacted as Republic Act No. 12314 or the General Appropriations Act (GAA), the education sector received the biggest allocation at P1.345 trillion, followed by the health sector at P448.125 billion and agriculture at P297.102 billion.

Marcos vetoed nearly P92.5 billion in unprogrammed appropriations, while retaining funding for foreign-assisted projects at P97.30 billion, revised military modernization program at P50 billion, and risk management related to private-public partnership projects at P3.6 billion.

The passage of the 2026 GAA came two days before the 2025 national budget expired amid heightened public scrutiny and outrage over billions of pesos pocketed through government projects, with many tied to flood control.

God forbid a tragedy is named.

This year, Banaag Diwa, the official literary folio of Atenews, invites the Ateneo de Davao community to reimagine Simbako!—to write and photograph the ways we confront the inevitable. Through poems, stories, essays, and photos, we ask: What are the things we fear might happen, and what do those fears reveal about us?

Submit your pieces here: https://bit.ly/BanaagDiwa2026

Deadline: February 7, at 11:59 PM. For inquiries, kindly send an email to [email protected].

Note: For multiple submissions, please fill out the Google Form separately for each entry.

EDITORIAL CARTOON

In November 2025, Trade Secretary Cristina Roque insisted that a ₱500 budget, based on the DTI's price guide for basic items, would be enough to cover a simple Noche Buena meal for a family of four. This exposed a significant disconnect between government officials and the daily realities of lower income households facing growing prices. To say that a stripped down version of noche buena and media noche with canned goods is enough for a family of four is not only a moral offense, it reinforces a lower standard of living and yet again, another problem to endure.
