Guangzhou youth get taste of Filipino
culture in China
GUANGZHOU, China – A colorful and lively celebration of friendship was recently held at Jingshi Aoyuan Nanao Experimental School, Guangzhou city, Guangdong province, southern China, as the Philippine Consulate General in the city launched the “Building Bridges” initiative, a special program as part of the Language Month and the 50th anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China.
Thirty selected students participated in the activities that introduced, not only Philippine games and riddles, but also the deeper spirit of culture and unity championed by the two countries.
Patintero, Luksong Tinik and Sipa proved that tradition never gets old.
With every shout and laugh, the Chinese students were shared the spirit of teamwork, strategy, and perseverance – characteristics that Filipino students also learn in schools.
For the students of Jingshi Aoyuan Nanao Experimental School, this was the first time they experienced the games that Filipino children grew up with.
With simple drawings on the floor and agile movements, the spirit of “barriolympics” came to life, which is directly inspired by Philippine street games.

Riddles, a bridge of understanding
Along with the games, the students were also fascinated by the colorful kites with riddles written in various Philippine dialects – such as Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilokano, Waray, Pangasinense, Aklanon, and Chavacano.
Each one came with an English translation so that Chinese students could better understand it.
In their attempt to solve the riddles, the students discovered their similarities to the Chinese( mí yǔ) — a clear proof that, despite the ocean separating the Philippines and China, the creative thinking and appreciation of the language of Filipinos and Chinese people still converge.
(mí yǔ) is called a riddle or puzzle in Chinese culture.
It is a form of traditional word game that uses clues, metaphors, and hidden meanings to test the intelligence and imagination of the answerer.
Like in the Philippines, (mí yǔ) is usually played during gatherings and celebrations, especially during the Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao Jie) where the riddles are written on paper hung from lanterns.

Pinoy flavor
It was not only the mind and body that were strengthened that day.
The students also tasted the sweetness, sourness, and flavor of Filipino foods, as they tasted ensaymada and ube from Mary Sweets, a Filipino company based in Guangdong.
In addition, their thirst was quenched with cold lemonade, or blended lime juice.
At the end of the program, the youth happily received “Love the Philippines” bags, which contained tourist brochures and food made by Oishi – a small reminder of their unique and extraordinary experience.

Language as spirit of unity
Buwan ng Wika is an annual celebration held every August in the Philippines, and according to Iric Arribas, Consul General of the Philippines in Guangzhou, it aims to promote Filipino and other indigenous languages of the country as pillars of national unity.
Under the theme “Developing Filipino and Native Languages: A History of National Unity,” the role of language is emphasized not only as a means of communication, but also as a bridge to understanding people and cultures, Arribas added.

Deeper friendship
Overall, the event was more than just a simple program.
With every game, riddle, and meal, the Chinese youth had the opportunity to see the Philippines not only as a neighboring country, but as a friend and partner in the development of culture and respect for diversity.
As “Building Bridges” continues, the path to a stronger and more enduring understanding between Filipinos and Chinese is being paved. (CMG)

Basketball Pros Promote American Excellence in Sports, Deepen U.S.-Philippine Ties

Alaminos City, Pangasinan—American basketball pros Sam Vincent and Taj McWilliams-Franklin are visiting the Philippines to participate in a series of engagements that will showcase American excellence in basketball and empower young Filipino athletes and leaders as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Envoy Program. This initiative strengthens people-to-people ties between Filipinos and Americans through their shared love for sports, while inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Vincent is an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics in 1986 while McWilliams-Franklin is a two-time WNBA champion with the Detroit Shock in 2008 and the Minnesota Lynx in 2011. Both players transitioned to coaching following their successful professional careers as players.

During their visit, Vincent and McWilliams-Franklin will lead basketball clinics and leadership seminars in Alaminos City in Pangasinan, organized in partnership with the local government.

The visiting U.S. Sports Envoys bring their professional and collegiate coaching experiences to train young athletes in basketball fundamentals while fostering the values of leadership, dedication, and teamwork that will help participants succeed in their professional lives.

The visit underscores a love of basketball in the United States and the Philippines—one of many facets of the people-to-people ties that form the bedrock of the U.S.-Philippines bilateral relationship.

“Basketball has long been a shared passion between Americans and Filipinos. Through the U.S. Sports Envoys program in the Philippines, we celebrate that connection while also empowering young people with the leadership, dedication, and teamwork skills that sports uniquely provide,” said U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Y. Robert Ewing.

The U.S. Department of State’s Sports Envoy Program sends passionate, inspirational professional athletes to engage communities across the world. The program promotes people-to-people ties and empowers the next generation of athletes as leaders through sport. Since its launch in 2005, more than 300 envoys representing 24 different sports have traveled on behalf of the U.S. government to deliver impactful programs and strengthen bilateral relations.

American Educators Train 48 Filipino Teachers in Cutting-Edge AI and Literacy Tools

Mactan, Cebu—On September 26 and 27, the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines' Regional English Language Office (RELO) hosted a two-day intensive training in Mactan, Cebu, to equip 48 educators from various regions across the Philippines with innovative strategies for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in their classrooms.

This professional development was facilitated by three American English Language Fellows—Laura Roach, Maryann Miller, and Michael Schapiro. These Fellows are highly-qualified U.S. TESOL professionals selected by the U.S. Department of State for 10-month assignments abroad to support public diplomacy and educational capacity building.

The workshop, entitled "The Educator’s Edge: Mastering Literacy, AI, and Critical Thought," focused on creating an integrated learning module that guides learners from basic language skills to critical thinking skills. This module will serve as a tool for the educators to utilize in their own classrooms and share with their colleagues, creating a multiplier effect in enriched pedagogical practices.

The training also provided hands-on experience to implement American-developed instructional technology. Educators were given a showcase and practical experience with a half-dozen U.S. AI/EdTech tools designed to personalize learning and increase classroom efficiency. These tools enable teachers to streamline tasks like content creation, assessment, and differentiation, allowing them to focus more on student interaction and critical thought development.

U.S. Embassy Regional English Language Officer Jeff McIlvenna framed the initiative as an investment in a critical bilateral relationship. "The paradigm of this activity was specifically designed by our American trainers for the professional development of Filipino educators,” he said. “This program is a concrete example of the robust bilateral cooperation and shared values between the United States and the Philippines, providing revolutionary techniques, and showcasing American excellence in English teaching in the Philippines."

The program is the latest in a series of initiatives by the U.S. Embassy's RELO to support education in the Philippines. American English Language Fellows are currently teaching and assisting in projects at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Southern Leyte State University, and Mariano Marcos State University, actively building long-term collaborations in education.

SEC launches first Green Equity Guidelines in Southeast Asia

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) continues to advance sustainable finance in the Region with the launch of the first Green Equity Guidelines in Southeast Asia.

The Commission on September 23 issued SEC Memorandum Circular No. 13, Series of 2025, outlining the Guidelines on Philippine Green Equity. This forms part of a series of Sustainable Finance Frameworks issued by the SEC to expand the capital markets in sustainable growth and development, complementing the PHP1.02 trillion Sustainable Finance fixed-income market.

“The issuance of the SEC Green Equity Guidelines is a game-changing initiative that will help develop the capital market not only by boosting liquidity but also by supporting our climate goals,” SEC Chairperson Francis Lim said.

“This also positions the country as an emerging destination for foreign investors seeking credible, transparent, and meaningful green investments,” he added.

Green equity criteria

Companies intending to carry the Philippine Green Equity Level must be listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) or preparing to go public, with more than fifty percent (50%) of their revenues and investments (sum of capital expenditure and operating expenditure) earned from or directed toward Green Activities. Such activities must meet the eligibility criteria of the Philippine Sustainable Finance Taxonomy Guidelines (SFTG) or the ASEAN Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance (ATSF). Companies’ revenues derived from fossil fuels must also be limited to less than five percent (5%).

Details or information on meeting the criteria must be contained in an external review assessment report submitted to the SEC and made publicly available. Philippine Green Equity Label holders are also subject to an annual assessment by the PSE to ensure compliance with the criteria.

Adequate Reliefs

Recognizing market readiness and the need for a proper transition in adopting Sustainable Finance Taxonomy principles, the SEC provides for adequate reliefs for companies that are on their paths towards full alignment with the SFTG or ATSF. In any case, applicants are expected to demonstrate that the Green Activities covered by the Revenue and Investments criteria make a substantial contribution to at least one Environmental Objective under the SFTG or ATSF, and attest that the covered activities are not known to cause harm or to be in non-compliance with the Minimum Social Safeguards at the time of application.
