LGU-Oras Conducts Benchmarking on Palapag's Municipal Solid Waste Management Program💙💛

In its continuing pursuit of innovative and sustainable environmental solutions, LGU-Oras conducted a benchmarking activity in the Municipality of Palapag, Northern Samar to gain insights into its best practices in Solid Waste Management, particularly the operation of its Thermal Decomposition Machine.

The LGU-Oras delegation, led by Mano together with municipal officials and employees, was accompanied by Hon. Mayor Florence Batula, MENRO Officer-in-Charge, and other Palapag personnel during a visit to the municipality’s Central Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where the thermal decomposition machine is located.

During the site visit, Palapag's waste management team presented their waste management process—from waste collection and segregation at the barangay level to the processing of residual wastes through the thermal decomposition machine. The technology significantly reduces waste volume while minimizing environmental impact, providing an efficient and sustainable approach to waste management.

The delegation also observed the actual operation of the machine and engaged in discussions on its maintenance, sustainability, operational requirements, and potential application in the Municipality of Oras.

In addition, LGU-Oras learned about Palapag’s Vermicomposting Program, where biodegradable wastes are converted into nutrient-rich organic fertilizer through the use of earthworms. The process not only reduces organic waste but also produces compost that can be utilized to support agricultural and gardening activities.

The benchmarking activity reflects LGU-Oras' commitment to exploring practical and environmentally responsible innovations that can further strengthen the municipality’s solid waste management program and environmental protection initiatives.

LGU-Oras extends its heartfelt gratitude to Hon. Mayor Florence Batula, the MENRO Office, and the entire Municipality of Palapag for their warm hospitality and for generously sharing their knowledge and best practices.

Heritage and History in Palapag🏛️

As part of the LGU-Oras benchmarking visit in Palapag, Northern Samar, Hon. Mayor Florence Batula toured the delegation of LGU-Oras officials and employees to some of the municipality’s significant historical landmarks.

The group visited the centuries-old Palapag Church Ruins, a historic Jesuit-built structure dating back to the 17th century. Though weathered by time and natural elements, its towering stone walls and arches remain standing as a testament to Palapag’s rich cultural and religious heritage. Located beside the active Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, the church is believed to be around 360 to 430 years old.

The delegation also paid a visit to the monument of Agustin Sumuroy, the native son of Palapag who led the historic Sumuroy Revolt against Spanish colonizers on June 1, 1649. His uprising, sparked by opposition to forced labor and abuses against the people, spread across various parts of the Visayas, Mindanao, and Luzon, making it one of the most notable resistance movements during the Spanish colonial era.

The tour provided the LGU-Oras delegation with a deeper appreciation of Palapag’s rich history, heritage, and enduring legacy.

Warm welcome in Palapag💛💙

LGU-Oras delegates, led by Mano together with municipal officials and employees, were warmly welcomed by Hon. Mayor Florence Batula at the Palapag Municipal Hall during the benchmarking visit on Palapag’s Thermal Decomposition Technology for solid waste management.

Mayor Batula shared Palapag’s experience in adopting innovative waste management technologies, along with the rich history of their municipality as one of the oldest towns in Northern Samar. The gathering served as an opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen collaboration toward cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable communities.

Highlights | Brgy. Cagtoog Farmers Exposure Visit to KaBANITHAN and KaLIBAONGAN Projects

Mano introduced the Project KaBANITHAN (Kada! Bayobu-a, Araduha mga Natad gamIT han makinarya) to the Brgy. Cagtoog Farmers Association under the OBRA Program, guided by the vision of ORSA – Oras Riko, Sustiner Aura.

Sir Salvador Dalosa, OMAS Head, also discussed the importance, details, and timeline of the project, which aims to transform idle lands into productive areas through community cooperation and LGU support through machinery.

After the discussion at ACCL Hall, the farmers visited the implemented KaBANITHAN Project in Brgy. Sabang and the KaLIBAONGAN Bangus Project in Brgy. Dao to personally see how the projects are being implemented and to gain ideas and strategies for possible implementation in Brgy. Cagtoog.
